| Some vets are good for pigeon fanciers. They have to be to get repeat business. Some are down right money grabbers. Especially the small animal vets. New puppy is a case in point. She and her litter mates got their shots week ago. $80. Vets assistant told my daughter in law that they needed shots yearly. Booster shots. THEY DO NOT!! Does more harm than good according to studies! The vet said this pup had a ligament injury. Needed two pins, wire etc,. Cost? $5000! I told my daughter in law to not make an appointment. So she canceled the surgery. They wanted to charge her $85 for canceling! The pup has nothing wrong with her whatsoever! Apparently this is a common issue with pups and they eventually grow out of it and in most cases when done it does more harm than good. So be careful of what vets one uses. Finished rant!! |

| Can I suggest that 1 ounce of food per pigeon per day is not quite enough Phil411.
Are you racing these hens?
If so are you building them up every week?
What sort of food are you giving them?
Having asked all those questions - I am in a similar boat, in as much as my yearling hens will not fly very much. We only have yearling birds as we only started again last year after a long lay off.
I am worried that if I flag the hens, they will go off to find cocks down the road. But they race OK, not as fast as the cocks yet, but I am trusting that as the season continues, they will get better and faster.
All the best, let us know what happens (and the answers to my questions)
fingers-Phil |

| Knackered what my son had done apparently was give her one drop of Metacam. New drug to me! Non steroid. Works like Prednisone. She has been bouncing around for two days now and has put on almost 3 lbs. Why did the vet not recommend Metacam? Money I suppose. Son has access to all this stuff. 2000 sows and little pigs, needs it there. |
