New Stock Birds Empty
PostSubject: New Stock Birds   New Stock Birds EmptyWed Jun 07, 2017 5:52 am

Yesterday our negotiations to buy two new stock birds came to an end. We bought two Ad Schaerlaeckens past racers from him.

We will not receive them for a week or so, because, the banks take ages to transfer International monies from bank to bank. Also delivery to this part of France only happens once a week.

I had to pay 120 euros (£105) for transport which seems very high, but I guess I am luck to get anyone to deliver birds to me.

Details and photo to follow.

I have just been sent these image of the two Ad Schaerlaeckens stock birds we bought.

The Cock
New Stock Birds Cock10

The Hen
New Stock Birds Hen11

As you can see they are only grand children of quality birds, but we might get something half decent out of them.  I do hope so as they have stopped me from eating for the next month, to pay for them - lol!

What do you guys think about me taking a late round from them, when they arrive?

Hi Mate,

I am going to start calling you 'Hawk Eye'. I agree, the bird in the picture seems to have a silver-ry coloured eye and the eye-sign image is different. I will let you know when it arrived hopefully, next week.

Phil[/quote]

Just my opinion - so don't take it the wrong way.
You got grandchildren off the reference birds, if you take some latebreds these are Great Grandchildren and you'll not race or train them this year, come next year you get tempted to breed off these untried pigeons so the yb's off these will be Great Great Grandchildren to hopefully race. Now I'm not saying they will or won't race well but there's some truth in "the apple not falling far from the tree".
Anyway hope they meet your expectations and you do well with your new birds.
Again my opinion Smile

Hi Barnie,

Thank you for your input - it is always good to get a broad spectrum of ideas.

Just to clarify - Are you saying in your opinion, I should not breed from the new stock pair this year - BECAUSE I can't train or race them in the year of their birth?

If it was earlier in the year, and I could train them and give them a race or two, would that make the difference?

Hi phil, what I mean is if you take some latebreds this year there's every chance they won't get tried out, even trained, but once they get into next year you may be tempted to breed off these latebreds ùntried pigeons, so in my previous experience more of a punt. Depends on your breeding plans, if you breed around bloodlines of pigeons purely related to top performers, or off proven good prizewinners or breeders of prizewinners. Many roads to Rome as they say.

Once again Barnie - very valid points you make.

The pedigrees of the two new stock birds are good in two ways in my opinion:-

1. They come from reasonable bloodlines - (NOT top bloodlines as it is hard for any working man to BUY top pigeons these days as they are mostly nuts prices) We don't have any money at all and we have had to save like mad for 6 months to get these birds.

But we buy the best we can.

2. They have won prizes already in their own right.

I know that even if one buys birds costing tens of thousands of pounds, you are still not 'Guaranteed' to get any (or many) good ones.

I think a really good fancier can maybe get 2 top birds in their lifetime. And most don't get any.

Also - we have a very well thought-out breeding programme and there is no way I would breed from the children of quality stock, without trying them extensively beforehand.

We have direct children from TOP winning and breeding birds at stock here, and I haven't yet bred from any of the pigeons we have bred.

We have around 40 young birds this year, which we will race every race possible and at the end of the year decide which ones we will keep for next year. But may not breed from any of them next year either.

We will have 7 breeding pairs and 7 'feeding' pairs and next year only breed from the Breeding pairs and float eggs under the feeding pairs.

Phil

You have invested the money and did the work. There are no guarantees, as you know. Personally I would breed off them. Some return on your investment. If you have the room and inclination, take some late breds. Then change mates and breed a few more. Then you have a group of related pigeons to play with. Inbreeding, line breeding etc,. While away the dead hours writing down prospective mating's. Keep your fingers supple!!

Sound advice Hal.

I trust you do better racing this weekend than we have done with our old birds - don't know yet about our y/b's.

Phil the fingers.

By the way - the bandages are off now full time, skin really fragile and soft but coming on!
