PostSubject: Shipping night.   Shipping night. EmptyMon Aug 07, 2017 1:52 am

Conversation shipping night Aug 5th. Thought some folks might be interested. I arrived with 10 birds. Other 3 members had 45 then a 55 then a 40. Dark system birds. One flying separated cocks and hens.
I was asked “Going to win this week?” “No got lucky last race is all.” “You had them in the dark?” “No.” ”Train this week?” “No.” The guys got curious. “You have them mated?” “Some mate up. Some with old birds.” Told them, yb loft is next to an old bird section. Door between always open. They all fly out together. Plus old birds from other loft. “Then how do you expect to win? No yb system.”
Told them I do not expect to win. Cannot train them as cheaply as racing them. I am looking at next year. I can only keep so many. So instead of giving them away at years end for meat will test them first.
Birds that come alone I need. From their ability to overcome setbacks and mismanagement etc,. Do not need numbers. They tend to be followers. Quite an argument got going. Finally one guy asked . Sneeringly, “Apart from last weeks race, ever win with young birds?” I did not answer. The club president did. Old Belgium guy. “Only bird on the day at least 3 times in this Fed. Trophy for best young bird couple of times. Others I do not know about. Know he won money in one loft races.”
“So why not now?” asked the guy. Told him. Not that interested in young birds. Did not race them last year. This is a way I tried one time years ago and got the best old birds ever. 'How come you never race old birds?” His answer? “Too much money invested in them!”
Each to their own.

Heard the same stuff for years, specially in much larger clubs. One large club I was in did not believe a young new member was winning so much. Suggested he was doping. Not at all! He had did his research and was trying out new methods etc,. Others did not change over the years. Eventually he quit flying. Busy day here moving birds around. Moved old birds to one other loft for widowhood next year. (See? Never too old to change!) So young birds basically have two lofts to themselves. They were mingling, old and young. 8 x 8 footer have to either pull down or refurbish for widow hood hens. 32 youngsters left from 40. Will train them tomorrow. Ship some not raced yet this weekend. 155 miles. Can afford to lose 10 and it will give me enough for next year. May ship a few more young bird races, if moult is OK. Not really concerned now. Will see how it goes. Should have 30 widowhood cocks for next year.
