| Up until we had that big hit losing those hens we lost very little, racing we've done pretty good, 1st race we were only 1 down, 2nd race 1 down, but returned a couple of weeks later, 3rd race all home, and this last one we are 3 down, so all in all really pleased, we might send a couple to Epsom this weekend, we'll take a look later in the week, just going to have a look and see what we have left , got some later bred ybs just starting to train and we will look to send them at the comeback races, so happy at the minute |

| We have 10 young cocks and 11 young hens left.
They have all been raced up to 200 miles + - We started with around 55 young birds.
We have lost a few in training. We lost 8 y/b's in a really bad race where the temperatures got to 42 degree C by mid afternoon. And I have got rid of a few.
I normally like to breed 60 to 80 youngsters each year - Not counting any late breds I might take from the best of that year's racing birds.
If I can end up with 20 at the end of the season - by the time the race/training basket has selected them and I have weeded out a few - I am a happy chappy.
I am not sure yet, about breeding too many youngsters after the old bird racing season has finished, but they can help to boost number if you are a bit low and I think it is a good idea to breed a few from one's best racers of that season. Plus I normally have a few people wanting a few later bred young birds.
Just my thoughts.

| Well. I bred 40. Have 32 left. Hawk got one, animal got 3. Lost 4 racing. However, does not mean much. Only had two races, 13 in one 15 in another. 115 milers. Won one lost one. 17 left not raced yet. So as last weekend race was canceled, (did not fly previous week) have to get 15 first timers to 205 miles this coming weekend. 115 milers moult does not mean much to me. However, 205 I have to pay attention. Weather is good will take chances. Bad forecast will hold some back. Averages, winning not concerned about. Experience is what they need. BUT! Having said that there has been years when the young were trained and not raced. As yearlings, after a few races they could compete with the others. Not all of course, but the majority. So, it is a question of each fanciers circumstances. You have too many, ship them regardless. I do not ship hoping to lose them. Not enough for the old bird season keep them back. Depends situation, all is flexible as regards methods etc,. I have enough room to keep all I have for next year. To the nest, no more lost, 50 plus old birds. Some folks are not in the same situation. Selection is critical. Attrition by racing the young the most obvious way to go. Good young birds do make good yearlings and old birds. 80% of the time anyway, I have found. Many, I included, (not any more) breed from birds in the hope that somewhere in the bunch is a champion. Nature is against it. She always wants to level the playing field. Survival of the species. Champion bird is not for her. Too far out of line. So inbreeding the best to the best may fool her. The smaller the gene pool the more rapid the results good or bad. But again, flying large numbers, young or old do support clubs. I am all for fanciers sending many. Knackered. Eclipse of the sun yesterday. Did not bother to watch it. Sun goes down every night anyway. See it from above maybe, later. St Peter at the Pearly Gates. 2 Mexicans, 2 Black people. He tells them to wait. Goes and asks God. Should I let them in? Of course God says, all are equal in Heaven! Peter leaves then returns. Tells God, they are gone! Mexicans or blacks? No God, the Pearly gates! |

Poor old God carn't take a trick etc tell him thou, if he replaces the pearly gates up there I will send him a few of our black fellas, who then will just burn them to the ground in a drunken rage before entering paradise as such. |
