Birds are just about through the moult. Was going to keep them all. Revert to my usual year end routine though. Cull heavy. Will get rid of about 30 or 40. All young stay as many were un-raced. Re-phrase that. Some out of so-so parents will go. Have to go by performance, not predictions for the older ones. Save on feed. Loft chores etc,. The fellow who usually gets them sells them for meat. Have to try and contact him again. Once the birds out of sight then out of mind. Less birds, easier to manage. Lowers costs. Have to set the bar higher each year. Of course, some I relate to and would give them a second chance but intend to pull down a loft or two. They have to earn a perch. Need to halve them again for next year also at seasons end. Should still leave me for next year about 60 birds, 10 pairs stock. Proven racers or breeders of winners. Oh well. Have to overcome my reluctance and just do it. I guess all the fanciers with too many birds also go through this. Ultimate goal? 6 stock pairs, 24 to fly. OB's. P.S. Did this few years ago and one guy broke them and raced them. Beat me a couple of times! Oh well, better they go for meat.
