Here is what one fancier posted on another site when asked about best pigeons for the distance. "" Distance racing has very little to do with the actual distance, it is the time that the bird spends on the wing. This is affected by environmental conditions such as weather, winds, time of liberation, daylight. Irish racing pigeons fly many, many miles over the sea in their races from France every year...you can take the cream of the Dutch distance birds and see how many would manage this task ? The cold air over the sea provides no lift, so they need to be really tough to kae that crossing. Unconditioned birds will not complete this task. The reality is that birds, through natural selection, get good at what they are tested against. I don't think that too many fanciers in Ireland or the UK would be without their "Old Blood" to ensure that they time in. On a good year the birds will be 12 hours doing 500 miles, on a bad year the race would be lucky to see a single bird in the first day....and the liberation is always early morning. I even think that the Belgians would challenge your assertion that the Dutch are the best....even the Polish and some of the German birds fly further and into more difficult terrain. Depends on what you want to see :-)

A good read their hal I agree with him on that it's not the distance but the time on the wing that makes or brakes them birds with more time on the wing but may have flew shorter distances will be more fitter than the ones with one or two inland races then into a long one

When asked about 'Old Blood' this was his reply. "Steve O'Dea Pigeons> Logans, Barkers etc are British blood. Walkinshaws are a cross of Barker x Kirkpatrick - old English blood too. Delbars came here 70 or 80 years ago and have been continually selected to become great distance performers over the sea - but straight out of the box you'd struggle to get them 100 miles across the Irish sea, less mind from France. None are "The Best" !" Hackneyed old saying, but horses for courses. If your birds are doing good at the distance you send them, 100 or 500, unwise to change them. I bought some Ganus birds few years ago off a friend here. Basically Venus bloodlines. However, since Ganus made his money in SA his site is devoted to those pigeons. To the exclusion of his earlier stock birds. It is the one left, hawk got one, car another, a blue pied cock. Supposed to be a speedier bird than mine. YB's are hit or miss usually miss. Changed his hen. Won the club with a young bird this year fast race. Flying 40 miles longer and put in 13 birds. One member put in 40, other 35. He was slated to go this year for meat. However will keep him around. The nest mate to the winner was a day late. Both cocks. Have noticed that significantly last few years. Two nest mates, both cocks, one always here and the other always late. Puzzling!!
