In terms of eyes, my selection scheme is far more important than my breeding scheme. I select from performance lofts where possible, but I never ask about the pigeons I am buying until after I have bought them.
This is in part because other people depend on me to grade their pigeons and I do that without asking anything, so why should I have to ask for myself. The other reason that I do not ask is that asking makes the price go up. So I generally know the loft is successful and the pigeons are healthy and then it is up to me to figure out the rest.
One important note, I try to avoid eyesign guys and stick to performance guys. I do select by the eye as part of the selection process. In terms of breeding, my eye methods are very different than most so called eyesign guys. I consider pupil size and eye color and one other thing. Past that eye is not a consideration at all. If you select good eyes then you will have a loft full of good eyes, so when mating them even if you don't look at eyes at all, you will still produce a high percentage of good eyes.
Over many years I have come to understand that eyesign is bigger than our ability to produce it and here is why. Every year probably 3/4 of my youngsters will have eyes that the average eyesign guy would consider to be good. However, when you fly those out many very good eyes will be gone generally along with the other 1/4 that were not very good. Ultimately though, the ones that are left will pretty much all have good eyesign or at least in my view of eyesign. It is my belief that the eye is a very important and refined object and while we may improve upon its looks, we cannot improve on its functionality. Even the races can't do that, but they can eliminate a lack of functionality beyond our understanding. So restricted selection (getting pigeons from good situations) and minimal involvement in the breeding of eyes are the methods I use. -Book
