| I banded two today. Gives me a total of 18 banded. Others years at this time usually have all stock bird youngsters banded. I cannot pin point the cause. Weather not too much different. Feed etc basically the same. Speculating has to be the new loft. Old wood ones never had a problem. In fact had two hatch today in the race loft. Yearlings. I have to assume that the new plastic loft does not retain the heat with just a wooden floor. Will not try to heat it or modify it for next year. Probably will use it for a racing loft. All stock birds have raced or are broke here. But no matter this is the last year for the amount of birds I now keep. Have 50 bands. Doubt if they will all be used. Have a 24 x 8 foot loft divided in three sections. Have the new 10 x 8 stock loft. Have a 12 by 6 racing loft. Was 8 x 6 and added 4 feet. Next year will have the 8 x 10. The 12 x 6. 12 pairs to race. The last 4 feet for 24 young birds.. Plus aviary. The 24 x 8 will be demolished. Which means of course selection of pigeons to keep will be critical. Did it years ago with much success. Eliminated race winners that only won one race etc and were not consistent. So. All fly and race. No excuses. Just on freezing today. Warming up next few days. Heavy rain for 3 days forecast. Hawk sitting on the fence post end of drive way. No matter. Rain stops out they go. |

| 1953 at 13 raced two pairs. Nothing. Year later with another young fellow who had a father with an allotment went partners. To get pigeons I climbed church roofs on a night. Kept the banded ones. My partner was spending half a crown a bird off other fanciers. Rich bugger! We bred off the pairs. 6 pairs. 8 were left for racing young bird season with. 1954 competed in 6 races. Second in one race, few 4's in others. Ended up with 4 raced young birds. 1955. Flew 4 races only. Up to 350 miles. Won that one. In the top ten other 3 races. Next year joined the Merchant Navy. Feed was wheat at a shilling a pound or two. Plus from what we could scrounge when cleaning lofts for the big boys. They had open loft so what they needed they got from what was in the garden. Probably you can anticipate the next statements. Feed. Does not have to be expensive. Pedigrees are no sure way to winners. Both eye candy. Numbers mean nothing. But expense. Oh well. My take on it anyway. |
