PostSubject: We we ever learn   Fri Aug 03, 2018 9:52 am

Now, the greed to steal a march. gain any yard going, and the urge to Race is paramount ... sadly to the detrimental cost and downward trend and spiralling of the so-called sport is in today. Sadly only ever to get worse.
I, like many others, try most seasons for a later start to racing, and of course, a later finish.
Cold winds invariably, plus mostly from the East. Sense! forget the first part none and have nonsense to our peril.

Look at the returns - again this year already and even half a brain should be able to understand the nonsensible and stupidness yet again practised these past two weeks. Returns. North Rd cancelled. South Road put back a day. Even though the weather forecast and reality was far worse from the South Coast.
The results were less than a 5th. Stu 3 from 15 and so on. Bicc I hear went from Falaise France 32 from 2400 after over 6 hours. And so on.
Never mind the twaddle of 'If good enough they will do it'! Does this reflect on how many culls went to the even the short distances?
was the time, not so long ago when early March was considered even too early to mate up. Many 1st weeks in April.
Youngsters, like the old birds, flew the distance. the longer races 240 - 380 miles. Seasons end the problem often was 'Which had to go.
Losses on a Saturday were usually on the loft next morning... 2-3 days and then believed lost.
- Many came back on the Wednesday / Thursday which was basketed on Friday and some even won!

Youngster healthier bred. Also held their feathering longer.

Now we know that we can easily fly our birds even into Mid to Late September. To far better weather at that - Ok 1976 and a few over years were poor weatherwise ... But then regardless when born or sent it would have been the same.

Take the so stupid scenario of the longest race. On the North most seasons Lerwick.
'Must be the Saturday NEAREST to June the 22nd! Because it means 6 MINUTES LONGER DAYLIGHT! EEK!
When it was proven that that liberation then was liable for very unsettled weather. Can be clear one minute and foggy 2 minutes later!

Yet in July times were vastly superior! Timing in at 2 O'clock was not unheard off with far better returns!
Youngster losses stating in August fared far better. All facts.
And yet some / most rush to get the breeding over and on the Dark or Light system. Gain a march? Very expensive at that... and the costs each season is rising.

I get jeered because I don't entertain racing till in May!
I wonder how many wished that they hadn't sent these two past weeks?
Indeed JUST how many wished today that there hadn't been racing last two weeks.
Would have meant the same amount of races, but far more pigeons come seasons end ...
Does one really think, believe that they are giving themselves AND the sport fair innings?
Well, I suppose that depends on who is 'Tickling their' ear' and who they follow and vote for...
plus preparing to restock so very often. Yes, breed more to compensate their' losses.
Any and every excuse is made bar looking in the mirror.
Lofts full of culls means now one- one too many are prepared to lose many good birds for the hope and wing of a prayer that they might, just might have a winner ... and HANG THE COST! JMO.

Again, as posted on another Topic. Stu and I spoke yesterday … first contact since I let the pigeons go. Am taking the rest of the pigeon assets over later today. Aluminium Hospital cage … Never had a need or use for it .. just the odd stray, troughs / nest bowls and drinkers etc.
Any way North Rd cancelled last week. South road horrendous returns. Said Roly, like you state, always next week, so I never sent either … like a lot more. So maybe, just maybe some are getting the drift of it.

Think this has been covered in another post.

Written several articles in the BHW and the RP covering all the points raised,
FUTURE OF THE SPORT, HUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM < NO WE HAVE MANY,
IT MAKES A GROWN MAN CRY, THE OUTLOOK etc; along with over 300 letters over the years in an attempt to improve the sport.

The late Steve Spinks, Mike on His Hill and my self attempted to bring to the sports attention what was happening and what the results would be if changes were not made.

This started not last year but in 1970, and ever since.

During that time we covered every conceivable point that could possibly improve the sport, result, APATHY.

As I have requested many times, let the present set up state JUST ONE IMPROVEMENT THEY HAVE MADE TO THE BENIFIT OF EVERY FANCIER DURING THE PAST 50 YEARS.

STILL WAITING>

Regards.

I well remember the great and late Steve Spinks! Indeed I wrote many articles for him and also the BHW at the time.

Strangely enough I was in two clubs of the former editor of the BHW C /S. Though he remembered and recalled me, I can't say the same. Must have been different times of the clubs starting and shifting around in those day. But mainly in close range of each other.

Have numerous letters from Steve, his life story etc;

We corresponded on nearly every matter on earth.

Wish there were a few with the same concern he and Mike on his Hill and myself had for the future of the sport and it would not be in the state it is in.

They do not make them like that any more.

Regards.

After discussing many matters including life in general it was a joy when in one article he wrote that he did not know how things came about but it was not by evolution.

My wife and I arranged to meet him in Blackpool and had a jaw wag, he enjoyed a drink I hate the stuff.

Regards.

Misty. It is a pleasure to meet people and discuss matters of interest. Pigeon fanciers, as opposed to gardeners or aviation people etc are much more diverse. Most will contradict and oppose anything new. Or agree to get better birds or supplies if free.
Human nature. Husband and wife. Long years of marriage. Give and take. She is wrong but you tell her she is right. If not misery ensues!
For all your good intentions to better the sport, make it more equitable to all, will never happen. The sport is stuck. Minor changes occur but nothing drastic. As with marriage. Liveable medium.

I also corresponded with HARAMBEE, Ted Bennett, for many years until a few years ago, the last time he wrote it took him two days to write the letter and I have not heard from him since, I know he was not in the best of health and I have tried unsuccessfully to contact his family.

I would appreciate any news that anyone can throw on the matter.

He lived in AMERSHAM.

Regards.
