Discussions going on I see about flying young birds with old birds etc on the one program as such together, to maybe help with the problems in the local sport with the losses. The itch factor Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes we solved a 100 years ago down here bounce bounce & I just wonder if the idea has any chance of getting off the ground so to speak  Smile Smile. cheers

it has to be the way forward surely ,they could even do a separate liberation for those concerned about ybs not getting educated funny thing is the ybs often beat the old birds ...can you imagine 1 season from beginning of june to end of September Very Happy ybs bred later in better weather ,no need for darkness ,transporters will be fuller so should be cheaper racing, birds have prime time weather wise or in theory at least ,I would love to see it but even when we suggested a old hens race with our ybs for our last yb race from Berwick 300 mile the older flyers went into uproar lol! so it got voted out ,yer damned if you do and yer damned if you don't ,I suggested ets for some of our older members who are having difficulty clocking their birds and also struggle with the race sheet and got more dummies out of the pram lol! guys saying they are packing up if ets comes in Rolling Eyes even the smallest things are difficult to change Basketball

Common sense approach in this day & age for some I would suggest Hal Smile Smile. Half empty transporters serve no purpose from my perspective & all it does is make the cost factor blow out the door etc which then leads to many flyers leaving the sport unfortunately & that then makes it twice as hard for those hanging on by their finger nails just trying to keep the sport alive as such. cheers

I would suggest that in view of the present state of the sport, ANY reasonable alternative should be at least given a try.

There has always been the odd race which involved both young and old birds in some clubs.

The transporters would be utilized more fully, the raptors would not be killing only young or old birds, they can only kill so many and the more involved the bigger the percentage that would get through.

The costs would be cut.

A complete new starting and stopping programme for racing could be introduced, and it may not go down well but fewere races in the best times to avoid the raptors etc;

If fanciers start kicking about new ideas, FOR A CHANGE, matter may be on the up and up.

Regards.

did suggest it few years back, trouble is our transporter full most weeks in y/b season, our club regularly sends 300+ and fed total usually about 2000 -2500, already towing a trailer for lads up on north wales coast who joined fed few years back, good idea I think for any club who has facilities to support it but cant see our lot going for it short term anyway

redrog,
That is one of the problems, you cannot suit all fanciers positions.

There has got to be a bit of give and take if the sport is to survive.

It may be prudent to suggest that less young birds are bred in hope rather than expectation.

At one time we had a 12 bird limit, due to the transporter capacity.

The racing was better and fairer, far less no hopers were bred and only the best old birds were
      retained.

Today there is a breed as many as possible attitude and some must be good. this would be a
reasonable assumption if the parents were themselves proven performers, but thousands are bred
from paper pedigree birds from studs that sell from every bird in the loft based on the performances of
a very few.

If the birdage was limited fanciers would adopt a different attitude.

AS I and others have suggested transporters could be reduced in size to accommodate the
circumstances as and when the circumstances warrant it.

But as I have said many times over the years more attention should be taken of the natural health of
our feathered friends because if not the problems presently involved will be nothing to what will come.
as I said 45 years ago.

Regards.

Many different type scenarios can be played out with issue I suggest Rog Smile Smile For certain Fed's Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes maybe, just thinking outside of the box etc Wink Wink may just help them survive with a wee bit of luck, hopefully. My transporter here used to carry 7/7500 birds x 2 back in the good old days. Now, we have another Fed on board bringing in around $20,000 odd a year Smile Smile but we still cannot even fill one truck to it's capacity like the good old days here, sadly. cheers

yep I think our fed relatively strong at the moment and again with y/b races the birdage can vary a lot as some get sick/moult whatever, the idea of o/b going i have always thought a good idea for all sorts of reasons the obvious would be the towing home of y/bs, but also different start time to seasons and the prolonged interest from o/b races, never been one to hammer y/bs and think they need all the help they can get in the current climate, if some fanciers ways applied to me my old fella would of pulled my neck at 12, some would be clapping bout that but my kids wouldn't, its all about your point of view lol!

I would be surprised under the current climate if one of our main 3 organisations did not fold in the next 24 months especially the north route they are not thinking about nexts years racing and the yearlings they are prolonging the yb season with money races instead of educating the birds and thinking of the birdage for next year with yearlings being the meat of old bird racing I have said and noticed this over the last 5 years but no cigar ...we are down to 5/600 ybs most weeks yet in 2012 can remember 15/1600 the only salvation is going with the welsh north road for the longer races with the old birds else the longer races birdage would be pointless I think 50 went on the welsh transporter for Thurso and only about 20 for lerwick ...but hey lets keep hammering the ybs with silly money races to suit the usual names ,rant over may turn south with ybs next year Smile

Each Fed is different. UNC here has cut out races over 400 plus miles altogether. Big organisation and race from North to South. Usually good weather. Long distance fliers objected as that is were the shined. They were over ruled. Speed birds seem to be the name of the game now. Canada anyway.

The vast majority of fanciers here have sprint birds.

There are very few who bother with Nationals and the longer channel races.

Many are really no longer than training tosses, would not suit me.

In our local club the last few race have been won by .01 of a yard.

If you calculate the winning distance it is about 3" yes 3inches.

??????????????.

I like the 200-400 milers the best I don't like my birds in the baskets for days on end I have my own opinions about extreme distance racing which I wont mention lol! as we all have our preferences ,we have had no races whatsoever with that winning margin but it does happen I know in a lot of out and out sprint races but at the end of the day pigeon racing is not fair with wind and location ...but to call them training tosses is a real prod to those who like and indeed to those that master sprint racing atb

There is nothing detrimental in stating facts, most fanciers now prefer sprint racing as many race programs indicate, there are often only one or two races that could be called long races, or distance races.

Many fanciers only participace in the shorter races for many different reasons.

Many fanciers train further than some of the races.

This has nothing to do with the fact that most races today along with most pigeons are sprint orientated.

It is up to each fancier what they do as long as it is within the rules and nothing to do wioth anyone else, but that does not change the facts.

Regards.

misty you dismissed sprint races as training tosses I think that's a sock in the eye to guys who specialise in sprint and all the time and care they take to make their system work ...sprint racing takes more dedication than distance racing generally and that's another fact ...all I am saying is your comment is derogatory towards sprint specialists but if your happy to keep poking people then I am happy for you but don't expect no response

There is no intention whatsoever to in any way say any type of racing is good bad or indifferent and how you can feel what I say in any way should reflect on anyone flyng milers or sprint racing or distance racing for that matter I know not.

It is just a fact that some races are very short and if fanciers want to race from then that is their choice, it would just not suit me, I prefer to race from all distamces and did so.

It is a well established estimation amongst many fanciers that sprint racing is the future.

Anyone who takees the time and effort in any type of racing by choice and is sussessful deserves the credit and I have NEVER indicated otherwise.

Regards.

Also oldstrain you have said previously what you think about long distance racing, and those involved put far more effort over a longer period than the sprinters.

It is each to his/her own.
