A friend, a good friend of mine, whom when age 16 joined the Marines in 1939 ... they, like all services, allowed themselves to be conned regarding ages etc.  He lived in this small market town like me.
He won the Victoria cross saving many at great peril to himself. He sent the Medal back stating others were involved, and they too should also be rewarded. Back came the reply stating though some truth it was HIM that did so and so and such. He said stuff you, keep it. Fifty-odd years later his grandson said he would have liked that... So he wrote to the prime minister John Major. He received a reply within days. Te medal back within the fortnight. When he died, no one remembered him. No media recollect.

Another, a brother of a friend whom I grew up with, won the St. Georges Cross. He was brought up over the road from me in the same small market town. His ship went down in the North Sea. Severely burned all over. He dragged a women and her son 20 odd miles - another son took his life jacket off and drowned. 1952. It was in the papers and news etc. He became a high ranking officer.
When he died, no one remembered. No local paper or any media... just forgotten.
What am I saying? I don't know... However, I feel it is a shame.

Have a reasonable idea Daz Wink Wink where your coming from etc Smile Smile won't say why here Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes but I do have a reasonable idea Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes. Start rolling out history & the war scenario & then  attach the shame factor there Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad & we I suggest, certainly have a lot to be ashamed of sadly. cheers

The problem of course has always been, WHY?.

If you asked the vast majority of those involved in the front end of wars, actually doing the dirty work of those sat back in safety, they would say they would far better be at home enjoying life with their loved ones.

Heroes are made by circumstances, see a friend killed or injured and your whole attitude changes, revenge raises passions that under normal circumstances would never arrise.

Greed, envy and fear are the prime constituents that cause conflict and it is those with no intention of putting their lives at risk who cause them.

Of course we should be proud of those who went beyond the call of duty in an attempt to safeguard the lives of their loved ones, the pity is that it was necessary in the first place.

Have no fear ARMAGEDDON will be the final war when hearts of mankind will be judged and nothing else.

Regards.
