| Oh Hal, bet you wish the days of the hand harvesting was still with us, just look at all the fun you would have instead of sitting in a heated monster no doubt reading the local news at the same time and having a cup of coffee or something stronger.
Oh for the good old days ???????.
Regards. |

| As you will well know the farmers here often have to dry the corn at great expense, does the same apply to you?
Regards.

| Yes. Especially this year. 130 foot silo back of the barn. Dryer running most of the time.However combine can fill it in a day. All elevators are backed up. Full. Why a lot of corn is still out. Plus the mould issue. Much corn getting shredded and ploughed down. |

| Farming is akin to pigeon flying. Good years hopefully out number bad years. But the desire is there. |

| I think in all walks of life Hal we have good and bad years.
But it goes against the grain when you see your efforts ploughed in.
As for the drying, do you think it is detrimental to the quality.
How boring it would be if everything went to plan.
Regards.

| Misty. One has to dry corn down to 14% or so. Else it moulds. Dried corn is much better quality. Nothing is lost and many bacteria eliminated by the air/heat. The bacteria lost are injested when a pigeon fields. Good or bad? Do not know. Right on freezing again and sunshine today. Wild pigeons getting in the barn rafters to mate. So much like Spring I got excited and almost wet my plants! |

| True Hal. We often heard, read and even still do sometimes that the Tic beans etc. are black and better etc. because they fat is gone. Where in actual fact there is no difference whatsoever. I smile because the fat is very, very important and they like to think it's dried out.
Like adding the oil for the moult etc. It is a myth, but serves the purpose - only - of a good feel factor and looking after their birds to the best ability. Every thing a pigeon needs is in their natural feeds. the Autumn bounty is just that and does provide what is needed. Birds in the wild look jut stunning come mating time and after the moult regardless how hard a winter they endure. |

| In the wild nature provides all the right seed and other food at the right time of the year, seed as an example just prior to the molt to enable the feathers to withstand the winter and all the other food for the rest of the time to breed good young etc;
Lesson their for pigeon fanciers if thought out.

| Think all farmers have a hard time Hal, just watched a farming program regarding sheep farming and the way they have to auction their sheep, sure there are cartels involved that keep the prices down etc;
As far as I can see even if you have no health problems and losses from other causes it is a very hard and risky business from the outside.
Not to mention all the weather and other hazards involved.
Will not grumble any more when having a nice lamb chop regarding the price, but who makes the most profit for the least work?.
Regards. |

| There is another big Combine in now. Same as the other. Went behind the barns. Silo is full. Corn dry enough. Also back there a 12 row combine corn header. Six headers are rotated from out side to the middle both sides. One side is plugged solid. They are run by power shafts from the combine. Looks like one gave up the ghost. Expensive fix!! |

| Can remember the old combines run off the tractor, chaff everywhere and none stop hard work.
Used to get the seeds for the pigeons.
All the fun gone.

| Good grief, that is far beyond pea nuts.
Can you insure against such events?.
How old was the machine in question?, such machines break down just after the guarantee expires over here.
Things are never as simple as they appear.

| AS todays machines go it is just a baby you have been very unlucky, as technology improves so does the problems increase when matters go wrong, marvelous until they do, hope you have no more problems and get the rest of the crop in with no further problems.

| Many things manufactured for looks today rather than longevity.
Would not have thought that about farm machinery though.
Can never tell about looks, our sport should be a very good example.
