Watchfield In The Vale Flying Club with MB
*Remember there are No Secrets from a Bottle, just Hardwork, Dedication & Determination*

Well folks here we are again, this week (8th May) will see the Wiltshire federation at Falaise (186mile) for their first cross channel event of the season and the BBO are at Exeter (105mile), after deciding to miss last weeks channel race from Vire with the BBO due to the forecast we will just start our channel programme/team a week later, so the ones i had pencilled in for that one will now go to this weeks Falaise with the Wilts fed and the yearlings will go back to Exeter.

Last week i split the cocks and hens after they had been back from the race for a couple of hours, the birds were left resting in the loft on Sunday and Monday morning due to our visit to the North West to see Mum & Dad and the folks back home. Its now Monday afternoon and were back home now, i soon had the cocks out, followed by the hens and then the youngsters. So with basketing on Thursday this week i have just 3 more days to confirm my choices for the Falaise race from my shortlist.

Tuesday and Wednesday the team was out both am & pm were they exercised well, starting to look like widowhood cocks now, still not bouncing off at the slightest movement but flying hard for between 20 and 30 minutes each period. I decided to send 12 to the Falaise race which consist of my entire main candidates for the NFC races ie 5006, 5000, 38, 67, 02, 4986, 52, with these i sent 2 x yearling cocks on their first crossing, 2 x yearling hens who crossed as youngsters and a 2yr old latebred cock also on his first crossing.

Really looking forward to the NFC races this year as we always do, the first race which will be held from St.Malo on the 22/05/10, with basketing on the 20th, I have set up “67” hen whose cock i lost earlier in the season, she is a 2yr old Cheq Gaby Vandenabeele Hen and daughter of our good “5006” cock she will be almost chipping come basketing day so fingers crossed that there are no mishaps between now and then, she will go to Falaise this weekend (sitting 2/3days) which should hopefully set her up for the 22nd.

Wednesday evening now and i’ve just had a look at the XC weather site, showing North East winds showing 10 to 15mph, cloud and lots of rain for both Exeter and the channel areas so will be both be extremely testing races and looks like we will be racing on Sunday this week, the good thing about the Exeter birds if they hold over is that they are mainly yearlings who have never experienced an overnight in the basket so this will give them confidence when we do send these to the club channel events when we concentrate our experienced birds on the NFC programme. We sent the 12 to Falaise and the others to Exeter with the BBO.

Race day and what a horrible start to the day, bitterly cold full cloud and raining. Imagine my surprise when we get the call to say that the Falaise birds have been liberated at 0745hrs..........the wind here is strong North East and its been raining all night and most of the morning so far, the returning birds will really struggle today, spoke to a few friends who are predicting “the end of the season now for these birds” such is the forecast for the day to which nobody expected a liberation today. This was always going to be a tough race even if the weather was kind, strong north east winds are very tough, i decided to check a few other organisations who are across the water.... Lessay not liberated as yet, Vire definitely no liberation today so it is certainly looking bleak. This could certainly wipe out my dreams for the season with the NFC races but fingers crossed, we had sent our most experienced birds and if anything could come through for us on a day like today it would be these.

Our original federation programme was for Lessay but this was changed at a fed meeting for some reason (think it was lib site problems), to go to Falaise which is way off the conventional line of flight through France and in my opinion a poor choice which i stated at the time when alternatives could have been chosen such as Vire which is a lot closer to the original racepoint choice. I certainly hope that the people who voted for this racepoint have supported it and are in the same predicament now has the good members who have supported the federation in this race.

There was nothing we could do now but see what the day had in store for us, they were liberated at 0745hrs in strong North East winds, So i pencilled in an eta of four and a half hours for this 186mile trip as it would take an extremely good bird to be doing 1200’s today but this was the time to start watching, hoping and prayting, no doubt the birds would be very few and far between today with predicted heavy losses as i’m stood there in my jumper, coat and wooly hat its freezing cold.

We were at the loft in plenty of time as i cleaned out all the youngsters and other sections prior to the eta, we started to scan the skies from around 1210hrs in hopefulness that they could push through, Clare spotted our first arrival diving from the front over the tree’s, after a quick lap of honour he was down and in, i was very pleased and relieved to see that it was our very good “5006” cock. He was clocked at 12.17.14, we waited then for our next and at 12.32 we had two of our good hens “67” and “59” come over the house to be timed at 12.32.22 & 12.32.24, these returning birds were very wet and very tired but at least we had some home. At the end of the day we had 9 back out of the 12 sent which i think we were one of the very fortunate ones as other lofts struggled.

At the club that night, returns on the whole were ok saying that it could have been so close to a complete disaster, birds were very split up and these were quite a few discussions over the forecast etc etc, onto the club result with our Wiltshire Fed race from Falaise it was a fantastic result for ourselves M/M M&C Brown taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th on this very testing day, In first place we had our very good 3yr old Dk Cheq Gaby Vandenabeele cock a winner of 5th, 7th & 11th section with the NFC last season, racing widowhood with a velocity of 1207.5, in second was our 2yr old Cheq Gaby Vandenabeele hen daughter of the winner and previous winner herself, racing back to 3 day old eggs on 1143.9, in third was our 2yr old Blue Gaby Vandenabeele hen a daughter of “33” on widowhood on 1143.8 and in fourth we timed our yearling Cheq Koopman x Janssen cock on his first crossing and racing on widowhood.

So it will be up early now on Sunday morning to await the liberation news of the BBO birds from Exeter, went out and fed the birds and went back to bed, it is again a horrible start to the day, bitterly cold full cloud and intermittent heavy rain with strong north east wind again which would be blowing all these showers straight into the path of the returning birds if liberated, again it was going to be a long wait for a possible suitable break in the weather to get them home from this 105mile trip.

Well we got the call to say the birds were away at 0730hrs, very early but weve got to have faith in the convoyers and team. So a quick work out saw me placing an eta of around 10am at the very earliest. So back up and out to the lofts to clean out and get things ready for the arrivals a little later with the channel birds from yesterday still together, will split them all tonight.

We were at the loft in plenty of time and you would have thought it was mid-winter, it was freezing cold and no doubt the birds would find the going extremely tough again today as they did yesterday. Only difference with this one is we only have yearlings and a couple of 2yr old latebreds in this race. Well our eta soon came and went and it wasn’t until 10.16 that we got our first arrivals bang on line from the front to be timed at 10.16.57 and 10.16.59, soon followed by another on the same line a minute and half later, the birds arrived steadily and certainly on their toes from this one.

Due to this race being on Sunday, we were at the club early to strike off for our BBO Fed race from Exeter, it was the icing on the cake for us this weekend as we had another fantastic result to add to yesterdays, the result was ourselves M/M M&C Brown taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th on this another very testing day showing that the birds certainly hit a golden patch this weekend, In first place we had our yearling Blue wf Gaby Vandenabeele hen who scored as a yb racing on widowhood with a velocity of 1114.6, in second was yearling Blue Gaby Vandenabeele hen racing widowhood on 1114.4 again who scored well as a yb, in third was yearling Blue Gaby Vandenabeele cock, nest brother to the hen in 2nd and who finished 2nd club 5th fed last week and in fourth we timed our 2yr old latebred Cheq Gaby Vandenabeele hen racing on widowhood.

Wiltshire & District SR Federation - 24.04.10 from Seaton, the result was, 1st & 2nd D Morris, Gorse Hill with two yearling hens on 1566.5 & 1562.9, in 3rd, 4th & 5th was Smith & Baker of Gorse Hill timing three yearling hens on 1562.9, 1562.6 & 1562.6, in 6th was S Hughes, Ferndale with a yearling hen on 1535.6, 7th & 10th was C Croucher, Gorse Hill timing 5yr old cock & yearling cock on 1528 & 1514, in 8th, 14th, & 18th M/M Howard, Ferndale timing yearling cock& 2 x 2yr old hens on 1523, 1504 & 1501, in 9th, 13th & 16th was J May, Gorse Hill with a 2yr old cock, 2yr old hen & 3yr old hen on 1515, 1509 & 1503. In 11th was Smith & Best, Gorse Hill with a 4yr old hen on 1514, in 12th was M/M Pizzey, Ferndale with a 4yr old cock on 1513. In 15th, 17th &19th was M/M C Aldridge, Watchfield with 3yr old cock and two yearling cocks on 1504, 1503, & 1500, in 20th was R & P Hapgood, Ferndale with a yearling hen on 1499. Other club winners who were obviously disadvantaged by the wind on this day were Carterton, R Agg on 1476, Oxford Central on 1463, Oxford Premier, M/M Ward on 1443, Warminster, F Stone on 1409, Salisbury, P Waters on 1397, Ram Alley, M/M Robinson on 1389, Grateley, J Fulford on 1361, Test Valley, A Jones on 1290, Holbury, D Staddon on 1269.

Oxford Central (Wilts Fed) from Keith Shipperley, racing from Falaise on 8th May, the result was, 1st Keith Shipperley with a Blue Southwell, Van Loon, Van Reet x Wildermeersh on 982, 2nd & 3rd was M/M R Ward with their Keith Arnold Staf Van Reets on 894 & 882 and Keith was back with 4th on 836.

Late result for Ferndale (Wilts Fed) racing from Exeter on 1st May, in 1st was R&P Hapgood with their yearling Blue Staf Van Reet hen racing natural a winner of 2 x 1st this year so far with a velocity of 1643, in 2nd & 3rd was S Hughes yearling Kees Bosua widowhood cock on 1641 and 5yr old Janssen widowhood cock on 1603.

Well that’s it for this week, try hard, work harder, be happy and good returns.
