FRIDAY July 12th, 2019 Good Evening
I moved them onto 16 miles today hoping our luck would change for the better well that was not the case and we around 170 down from the 920 odd liberated at present from a 10.30 liberation.
400 odd came well the other 500 have been well split up and now coming in singles.
They were all liberated together which after a few minutes around 500 cleared heading north rather than south while the others headed in the right direction.
Will upload benzing live tomorrow around 1pm by then hopefully a good number will have dug deep and leave it running.
Will update Sunday Evening.

The team had a few hrs open loft today with baths down.
We will loft fly them tomorrow and be back training Tuesday.
Will update Tuesday evening.

Seems more and more like a case of pure chance, not all those lost are dummies, nor I feel can be put down to raptors.
Surely not all of those missing can have been killed, some must end up in fanciers lofts, does any of them get reported? and if so what happens to them?.
Also hope the other turns up.
Regards.

a question i always ask myself misty, why do pigeons with telephone rings rarely get reported .....?
are they all killed / found dead ...?

No Dave, I think most fanciers have taken up the stance not to bother. A. No one ever bothers to report mine, and B. Why bother! They won't want it back, not worth the money getting a cull back any way. Remember, when costing a shilling, rising to 3/6d (17 and half pence for the youngsters), if a bird wasn't on the loft, or back within the week, a report card came next week.
Trouble is now too many cam afford JUST! to have pigeons, but not to lose them. Very often the ones that the better fancier love as they regularly fill the lower places up for them. Plus help with the costs and even the coffers for prize money. Knew a fancier who uswed to quickly get a stray out the loft for fear or contamination and cull it... Know it said via a lot more that some do the same … I wonder who? Are they doing the same!

yes daz i agree, the cost of retrieval is in most cases far greater than the assumed worth of the bird.........also the courier costs are quite a lot more than when it was £7.50 many years ago. so naturally most would assume the owner would not want the bird back.
but there are those who would, without a thought kill anything which enters their lofts, without a second thought of if the owner would like it back........

Not only bad pigeons have an off day, many that have had a night out or reported flown down have become or been top class pigeons.
Any fancier worth his/her salt would and should give every stray a chance.
In our area strays used to be sent to as near as possible the area from which they came, when fanciers trained their own pigeons.
Tis a problem regarding the return by carrier and costs but fanciers should help each other as much as possible in returning strays and many do.
Perhaps a solution may be breed less and better.

i agree in most of your post misty, but does less always mean better ...?
when we think of paying £45 to retrieve a single pigeon, it soon adds up, imagine loosing half your yb team and them all getting reported ............ ££££££££££££££££££££££££££

As we both know David, there is no sure way of breeding the type of pigeon we want.
However, common sense dictates that if you breed only from those that have proved themselves the likelihood is that there offspring will be capable of flying a reasonable distance without being lost, maybe not win, but not get lost.
Afraid too many pigeons are bred from artificially maintained pigeons and based on paper rather than performance.
Do not know the answer David, wish I did.

Never work down here David would never mention the blokes name as I have the utmost respect for him with his ability's with a pigeon as such. But he did loose 40 odd birds at the weekend here sadly through no fault of his own as such in our race.

As you can see from Benzing live we changed to a Saturday trainer as most local organisations changed to Sunday racing..
It was not the best trainer with birds making hard work of it as they got turned back towards the lib point i think by a falcon a few miles away so that’s why they were slow working in but most did in the end.
I hope to train tomorrow all being well , the birds that came today will be rested.
Will update tomorrow evening.

It was an early start and a waiting game this morning for the mist to clear and the cloud to break before i could get them up.
They cleared perfect today all in one bunch as far as the eye could see , they arrived in about 5 bunches and then were getting the same pattern with some making hard work of it.
We will loft fly them tomorrow and when the weather is suitable we will go to the 30 mile mark.
Will update tomorrow evening.

I was hoping to train tomorrow but its on the cards to reach record temperatures so its not worth the risk for the gain.
Either Friday or the weekend we will be training again from the 30 mile mark.
Please see the video of birds today below.

The birds certainly look in good nick, some cocks appear to be more interested in the opposite sex than anything else, after following the one loft this year it proves there are numerous possible problems and impossible to solve them all resulting in losses, think to have a reasonable number for the final will be an achievement in it's self.
