There lies the problem. Maybe. Forecast is for showers and wind for the next 14 days. However. If I cannot train then no one else can. Most of the Fed fly widowhood any way. Assume the birds need training? Do not know.
For me open loft every day possible and perhaps in to the first race trained or not. Old birds (apart from some yearlings) have been to races. They should be smart enough to figure it out. Without a few training tosses to remind them. Will see what happens.

It may be enlightening to train some and not others and see the difference.

The only thing I can think training can do is make a unfit pigeon a bit fitter, physically, which should not be necessary if they have enough freedom daily.

Regards.

Misty. The situation I find myself in is this. Half the young birds bred last year did not race. Helping move my daughter, or distractions. Half did two races. All young last year had been 20 miles twice. Now as yearlings I feel I should refresh their memories at least once. Older birds not concerned about. That is why I over wintered so many yearlings. Some had never raced and one cannot pick out good ones by sight.
Proof here.

Think it well known in our sport Hal, that you cannot judge a book by it's cover.

As for training, never bothered other than the very odd toss for my own pleasure rather than the pigeons.

Can understand having to train when only allowed out a couple of hours a day and kept in all winter etc; but this is only because of the unnatural conditions the pigeons are subjected to.

If a pigeon is fit and given the fuel to do so, it will fly to it's full potential at any time, jumped them from loft into long and short races with no problems on many occasions.

I must add that mine had completely open loft all the year round.

It is obvious that if you deprive a pigeon of it's natural life you have to compensate accordingly.

Regards.

Understand what you are saying. However in this climate not possible.
Open loft. All year round.
However, train them or not yearlings will go 115 miles May 4th. Expectations? To win none. To get some home will clock first 3. Send in to the club. Others just right down times back. Week after older ones go 145 miles. Same scenario. Clocking expectations etc,. Week 3 they should start to show.
Fellow here yesterday originally Barbados. Gave him 5 youngsters missed banding.
Last year gave him a red American stray plus a few others. His wife, from Scotland let them out. Very bad day. Red made it back here. Untrained here. Showed him the bird yesterday. Mated to a white daughter of white hen from the US that arrived here shortly after a US hurricane. Flew one daughter last year. White. First bird home from 140 miles. Young birds. Whatever works breed from!
