learnt the hard way, anything that can only flutter gets nailed, sparrow hawk the deadliest and the peregrine takes them that make it skywards, got to be strong on the wing here, pros and cons but last year only lost one off the loft

Probably big aviary Ray, get them out in that daylight hours so they get used to surroundings. Or they are retired, partnerships on shift work, or don't work and have plenty time on their hands to get them out when the weather is a bit kinder maybe?

a common benchmark (nothing to do with me or my ideas) is to keep them in until the eye colour changes ,had 14 dutch pigeons did the same with them lost 3 when let out ,save the aggro breed later

| Heard that before oldstrain many years ago.
I think they maybe a bit strong on the wing though, and if spooked away we go too far to get back.
I am sure as with almost everything pigeon some will have had success whilst others ????.
Me thinks best to make avoiding the time when the sparrow hawk is most active, can ruin a young bird team.
Regards. |

Thats my question how do you get them out when its horrible like now and forecast for the next 10 days... I myself would worry about it ... thats why no hurry to pair my second stock team up

an aviary like colin said, out all day to get their bearings..........plus in that time spent in the aviary the eye will change as darren said...a lot do this with good results. failing that ray, let them out and stand in the rain and cold watching them, simples ..........

Done it this way for years. Water heated. Light bulb in biscuit tin with holes in the lid. Waterer sits on top. When big enough they go in to an aviary. Watch the hawks chase the barn pigeons. They are out there most weather. Snow or rain. Sure strong on the wing when first out. Usually Marc end or April. But with the aviary they know the area for miles. Losses? Very few. Each to their own.

Well I wouldn't let ybs out in this weather, even old uns stay in , its that bad ...I have ybs in the nest now only because they are for specialist racing otherwise I wouldn't bother

End of March or beginning of April. Nothing out until then. Hence the aviary. As stated, strong on the wing. But they know the area. Guy on the East coast, little milder, has 127 weaned flying out. Beleive he sells a lot also, later ones. He uses an oil filled radiator for heat. Safe that way.
