the thing to remember here is that they are distance birds and chris as i gave you some of them i know a little of there background the strain of pigeon i gave to you are slow matureing go easy with them and give them a few races 2 or 3 and your patience will be rewarded but train them well say 150 miles max 300 as yearlings then let them go to the long races as 2 year olds but its up to you at the end of the day many distance fanciers adopt this aproach as to the source where these birds originated from good luck chris

well guys thanks for the replys, looks like i opened a can of worms here and for that i apologise, lets just say that after all the sugestions recieved it seems that everyone has there own way of doing things and what suits someone may not suit someone else, so judging by this it seems i have to find a way that suits me, my birds, and my lifestyle ie work and family comitments, as for the answer i am going to contact my local club to see aboat joining, and as the birds are of a distance strain i am going to see aboat using the clubs training facilitys and maybee enter them into some races but only if they are up to it, use the short inland races as a trainer for the y/bs and see what happens next year. bear in mind i will only have 8 y/bs max to play with this year so really i have to think long term and pick my races out and leave the channel racing for when they are 2 year olds, lets hope it works. thanks for the replies . and once again i apologise if my question caused any anomosity between chat members

i believe in racing them as ybs, but like you have been advised take your time with them, 2 or 3 races is still better than none in my opinion, just give them that little bit of experience for the following year

Loved reading this thread I'm in the same Boat Chris I'm going to let week by week decide I ve just joined a club where the majority of the memers are only in it for the sprint races i'm more interested in the distance myself I want to see them achieve the channel races for a start and if i do well it's a bonus (every last one of them in the loft.. but if i feel they are not ready at the time I'll hold them back until next year as yearlings) i feel they must have a few races as y.birds to sort the wheat from the chaff and will let the basket decide as well as my eyes hope this helps buddy

i think most of us new starters are wanting to build a team gradually and not over tax them, the more experienced flyers have gone past this stage now and are willing to send to every race because they dont need to go steady with them.

its heart breaking if you loose um all david your back to square 1 mate all you need to do is go easy you want yearlings to race as 2 year olds then start to push that bit more when you have a team

yes, this is why im going to race mine steady because altho they have had plenty of 35 mile trainers, they have only had two 56 mile open races which probably only sent around 200 birds.........so mine have had very little experience really.
