    Egg Bound hen Empty
PostSubject: Egg Bound hen   Egg Bound hen EmptyMon Jan 09, 2012 6:18 pm

I have a young hen that seems to be egg bound. She laid one egg on the grate and it broke so i threw it out. The second egg is in the nest and the cock sits on it. The hen is squatting alot and i felt her and there is an egg in her. I noticed 2 days ago and she still has not laid the egg. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chad

hi chad, sorry to hear this........firstly due to my own experrience ill tell you that an eggbound hen isnt something which can be sorted easily.........if the hen has been like this for quite some time the muscles become paralised making it impossible for the hen to pass the egg.

what i did was to inject with a syringe any sort of oil, ie wheatgerm or oliv oil up the vents when the egg should be, also hold the bird over warm steam from a pan of water.........you will need to keep doing this every 10 mins or so.

i have been told also to put this mix down the throat, but didnt try this method.

if all fails then you must get a syringe with the needle fixed on, and put it up the birds vents into the egg, puncuring the shell.........when you have done this draw the yolk into the syringe and the shell will crumple and reduce in size, the bird will then pass this naturally...........

im sorry to say all my attempts failed, and the hen died, its just a risk you have to take as the hen would die if left anyway.

    hope this helps chad

dont know if you can get some caster oil or not chad but if you can

get some and stringe it straight down the birds throat

as david said it will be hard to pass the egg but i know putting caster oil

down the birds throat works if caught quick let us know how you get on

Thanks for the help men. I checked the hen again now and there doesnt seem to be an egg now. I didnt find a egg nor shell in the box but I cant feel one in her like before. I went ahead and used the oil in the vent and down her throat but maybe it passed and she will atleast live.
    Thanks again
