how to get them to fly Empty
PostSubject: how to get them to fly   how to get them to fly EmptyWed May 16, 2012 11:56 am

Hi all
I have been learning my rollers to trap which they do well the problem is when I let them out all they do is fly up to the roof and sit there till I call them in, I have left them out for up to 4 hrs just to see what they do. I know that they are still learning as I am, but its fustrating. What's the best way to get them to fly or will it come with age.
Cheers mickie123

hi mickie 123, dont know anything about rollers etc, but at a guess i would look at how and what you are feeding them..........also have they become lazy and thats why they sit on the house roof ? have you tried making them fly....?

When they was weaned off there parents I did feed them to much but over the last couple of weeks I cut there feed back. I give them wheat as I was advised. I never no how much to give them. Was told to feed them until they go to the water then take it away.
Cheers

well as a rough guide i feed ybs one ounce of corn a day, this is 50 % widowhood mix which consists of varius seeds including maize, peas etc, i also feed 50% diet mix which is all small seeds including linseed..........one oz each per day at the moment seems ok,

ive also heard of some fanciers who do like you say and remove the food when they go for water, i have also used this method and have removed the corn once a third of the birds go to drink, ie 12 birds means four drink then take the food away.........

i know rollers will be different to racers, and their corn mix will be different too, but this may help a little.

any luck with the rollers, getting them to fly better.??

my muff tumblers were reluctant to fly first few wks of being let out,but now they are flying for around an hr at a time, and rolling well..
the rolling (tumbling) seems to come later, once they are older, but thats only my experience with keeping them.

Not really m8 they just sit there and then just try to get back in the loft but I stop them and then they go for a little fly 2,3 mins max, still young atm so hopfully they will learn.
