| Remember this being asked a while back, but never really to any conclusion lol.
Do members think that big wattles have any connection to how the bird performs, or the family etc and does a wattle actually do anything at all? |

| i was told the older birds had big wattles and they were better for distance but i,m not sure now if thats true,i had one yearling this year with a very big wattle and the bloke i got him off told us he would fly the distance,so i,m not sure if this applies ,the big wattled birds are for distance for some reason.. |

| yes the link worked fletch, the pigeon with the biggest wattles in my loft is a lefebre dhaenen and they are short to middle distance....but as i say in my opinion wattle size plays no part in racing ability.... |

| wattles protect the nostrils from weather conditions, a bird can adjust air through its nostrils with them. |

| Perhaps when a bird gets older it needs more protection? |

i think age does have an effect on the wattle alex, usually older pigeons have larger wattles, this is what ive found anyway.......as for wattle size having any bearing on racing abilities, just look in the weeklies or the pictorial and see if the major race winning birds have big wattles...... |

| i agree with david big wattles are usualy a sign of age and either way has no bearing on the quality of a bird though it does look effective and attractive on some birds |

Will agree david But Alex as pigeons have got faster they have become more streamline to allow for faster movement through the skye If you go back in time and look at birds in the 1950/60's all old bird had massive whattles the older they was the bigger they got but as time has moved forward so have the aero dinamics of pigeons |

| Interesting points there don suppose that the big wattles are being bred out of birds for that reason...because not all the old birds I have, have got big wattles...there's an 05 dhanen with a wattle like a yearling, so it shows they dont all have them...then 08 birds with big wattles lol, all the birds that are over 05 old have big wattles though lol |
