The purpose of an avairy etc in my view is to allow the birds to gain the benefit of the sun (for those that ever see it) Smile Smile Wink Wink  when contained in the loft. As such, concrete floor & wire on all sides including the roof. Easy also to clean it with a hose. cheers

I second that. Open as much as you can the more air sun and rain the better health of your birds. Very Happy

I'd have a flagstone floor, welded metal frame, bolt together sections with heavy mesh, preferably galvanised to stand weather. For the roof I'd have same mesh panels idea but the back covered with clear perspex sheet and front open, roughly half and half that way pigeons can get out of the rain if they want.

true mate, it would be costly, box section @£2/metre, weldmesh £85 a sheet, someone to weld it, galvanising etc soon mounts up. But once it's done it would last any loft out.

i would have roof covered because of migrating birds and concrete floor with a slight slope so it would be be easy to clean out with garden hose, the covered roof is recomended by defra.

the idea of an aviary is for the birds to sit in the fresh air and rain so why cover it birds wont sit out in the rain if they dont want to just make a washable base ie concrte so you can swill it down

yeah I would be worried about wild birds droppings going into the flite and spreading disease if carrying anything which is why I would always have a covered flight but in a ideal world would have it open ...not only that must be a real mess inside the flight when it rains unless ya got grills down and ventilation under the grills to dry out

you could always incorperate a tray that slides out and clean it but to me an aviary is what it is an open pen other wise whats the point

I think the main aspect is the birds get fresh air and sunshine despite the design
