PostSubject: Pigeons Tails up   Tue Jul 26, 2016 5:59 am

I have visited a few lofts over the past month or so and I have found that some of the Young Birds I have handled, hold their tail slightly upwards.

What I mean is - when you hold the bird in your hand in the normal way, with their head towards your stomach and tail pointing away from you - the birds tail is not held parallel to the birds, but slightly upwards. They can also be held in a Downwards position.

Do any members have any theory or thoughts about this? Is it good, is it bad? what does it mean - etc....

I absolutely hate that type of bird Phil Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes some may also suggest a weak back as such but I think not, as for me there's a bit more to it than that. The question one needs to ask is can they win bounce bounce & I would suggest yes, under the right conditions. But then Wink Wink  would one wish for a loft of them etc & I think not lol! lol! lol! but no harm in trying one or two, to find out what just might happen on race day. Because it's not always the perfect built pigeon than wins on the day from my perspective Wink Wink. cheers

I prefer a birds tail to arch downwards, as it denotes a strong rump etc, so im led to believe ....ive always found my best performers had this, and birds who`s tails stick upwards tend to be no good or get lost easily , I also prefer a pigeon to have the tail feathers as one looking downwards on them, not like a fantail. I TOTALLY agree Oldstrain - one can not dispose of birds that 'might' not be any good - you have to give them a good chance!

When I handled the pigeons that did have tails going up a bit - they are not mine and maybe were not used to ME handling them and might have been a bit frightened.

although I have handled many ybs wih arched backs downwards.......I have also handled quite a few whos tails flick upwards, but have noticed that as they get older the tails sometimes arch downwards and don't always stay "weak"

ive also noticed the birds with "weak" upwards facing tails tend to have less cover feathering down the tail...

lol!lol!lol! May I suggest Steve Smile Smile many a pigeon that goes in a basket to race etc would not fit in with your views/thoughts Wink Wink. I also would suggest Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes one could have the John Rumney type birds or the normal street pecker types Smile Smile lol! lol! that many of us have to race for the enjoyment factor. cheers

My comments are not directed at you personally but to most pigeon men they buy crap and then try and sell crap in the books and on pigeon sites at the end of the day truth hurts

I agree about crap being sold theirs a lot of lofts selling pigeons for big money that ceased racing years ago paper pigeons and also con merchants ...I have never sold a pigeon only gifts and always healthy pigeons to people who wanted to try them which is good for them (free birds) and also good for you as the birds get tested in different areas ....getting back to the topic ....a verical tail would be un-desirable but a bit of a lift in the tail as mentioned by the person who started the topic would be no big deal and i would let the basket sort them out ....i have no doubt some dont like to be told the truth Cool

if I had a young bird with what is known as a weak back (tail sticking up) I wouldn't like this fact, and would prefer one with a stronger arched down tail.....but would still race it like any of the others, as it may race ok.

I think where I would have more concerns over it is if I were buying a pigeon and it displayed the weak back, I would probably reject it unless it had a string of wins or had bred a string of winners.

I would prefer to buy a bird with the stronger arched down back, obviously with wins behind it...... Razz

i dont think a good standard is in question here edgie merely the fact i would not cull birds who had a slight lift in the tail up or down whilst handling that was my point each to his own though atb Smile
