| Does anyone know how to race cocks on the Celibate System?
It looks like we are going to end up with about 15 racing cocks and only 8 racing hens! (not stock birds).
Hal had the idea of putting one or two spare cocks in with the rest of the racing couples, to gee them up a bit. But surely not whilst they are trying to pair and bring up youngsters.
In the cocks section of our new racing loft, I have 12 widowhood type nest boxes. Every one has a cock in it right now. BUT - it looks like up-to THREE of the birds we thought were hens are turning into COCKS!
I half expected some trouble as we did not start breeding until Mid April, as we were very late getting our stock birds, but I am surprised how unevenly the sexes have worked out.
Is there a reason or a set of circumstances whereby more of one sex are produced during a breeding season? For example, weather conditions.
If you can answer this question, and/or know anything about how to race cocks on the celibate system, can you please let me know!

Phil Phil if I was you I would pair 2 cocks to 1 hen but were you have a normal box the type of box to use will be like 3 boxes with the middle section were the hen and bowl is but the cock can enter the centre box from either the left side box or the right side box |

Our problems is we only have room for 12 'widowhood' type nest boxes in the section. I do have two more complete nest boxes I made in the summer, but that are one-on-top of the other, not side by side. Cheers Phil |

| If you have room for spare cocks just use the hens you have ..instead of locking them up together on a Friday just put the hens in one end at a time for a few mins before basketing. Fresh hens will show to anything .or even just give the spares a bowl without a hen .just let them see a hen on return if that's possible...I hope you understand what I am saying |
