between 25 and 28 days for us roy when I see them picking up as we feed in the boxes with the breeders and the ybs soon cotton on some do it when they are fully feathered under the wing but I like to get um out for a look around early before they get too strong on the wing so 4 weeks max for me usually 25-26 days though

Thanks guys, was a bit worried last year and just wanted to be sure we got it right, so we will look to take them at 26/28 days this season and just keep an eye on them

I usually try for around 28 days, but check to make sure they are covered under the wings and eating/drinking...... because I feed in the nest box they should have learnt off the parents whats what by the age of 28 days.

That's what we did last year David, once the babies were on solid food we started feeding in their boxes so they could get the idea, will be doing the same again but look to take them a bit sooner

Once they're picking bigger grains out the nest box pots, some ybs ready 23 days but some take a few days longer.

i have heard some fanciers take the ybs away around 14 days with the hens........the ybs are all huddled together and all the hens feed all/any of the ybs regardless of if they are the mother... Question Question Question

I always plan on leaving the babies until they are at least 26 days old or fully feathered under the wing like most people have said. By then they are mostly picking up from the galley pot in their nest box.

BUT - quite a few times this year, we have found that the babies jump out of their nest box and 'mix it' with the others.

I have moved them over as young as 22 days old and they do very well.

This is when it is handy to be in partnership with a woman - most of them have a very strong 'Mothering' instinct. My wife is amazing with our young birds. She is very attentive and makes sure they are all drinking and picking up.

It is much easier when you move a few over at the same time. The bolder ones teach the slower ones the ropes.

I think its easy for a yb to go backwards if enough notice isn't taken at weaning age, once they go backwards I doubt they will ever be any good.....JMO

I wean when totally feathered under their wing.
Put them in the young bird section and stick their beak in the drinker.
