Does anyone know if any outside factors influence what sex the babies will be?

Are some breeds/families more inclined to throw males than females for example.

I am asking because, out of all the young birds we have bred this year, I have a BIG lack of hens.

We have 14 cocks and only 8 hens left.

Any ideas you peeps.

9 extra cocks here. Not a problem. As for your question, do not know. However, some people sex in the eggs with a needle. With young that need sexing also.

Hi Hal

Can you please explain or elaborate on your next but last sentence. "However, some people sex in the eggs with a needle."

Sure. Put about 7 inches of thread in a needle. Hold above egg inch or so. Cock bird it will circular motion. Hen back and forth. Accurate? Some swear by it some swear at it. Anyway, has worked for me 90%.
Heres a short video.

Needle trick a new one on me Hal etc. If more than one sex is an issue, remedy is
quite a simple one from my perspective. Cheers

OK - I give up - I have wracked my little brain and I can't think what you mean.

If you mean 'get rid of them' - that is impossible, they will be part of my race team.

Please tell me your simple remedy.

Hi Hal

I have looked at the YouTube clip - Do you just use a needle on the end of a piece of cotton, as I don't see how the guy in the video clip gets that thick piece of copper wire and something that looks like baler twine, to move at all.

regards

Not sure if it's a family trait in certain strains but some pairs throw more of one sex.
If you plan on racing natural maybe have the spare cocks in a seperate section or loft, race them totally celibate or put a couple fresh fantail hens in on basket night to motivate them but at least you're getting them raced and race educated as yearlings. Failing this you need to get some hens tumblers, anything, just to even the pairs up. But then you may not have enough nestboxes?

you can influence the balance of hens and cocks with the use of artificial lights. its to do with the colour temperature of the bulbs used. by balance I mean produce more young hens than cocks

Very sound advice Barnie - the only problem is, I am in France and I might as well be on the hunt for chickens teeth, than try to find fantails or tumblers around here.

We lost one of our precious racing hens the other day - maybe to a hawk of some kind - I saw a Lanner Falcon around here the other day - so now we are down to 10 hens (one of which might turn out to be a cock) and 12/13 cocks.

I will find a way to make it all work somehow.

Needle and thread. Have about 9 extra cocks. Anyway, mated all the racers yesterday. Need the YB/Hen loft renovated. Intend to separate them again mid January. Fly cocks on widowhood.  Will lose some so the spare cocks will replace the others. But all cocks go to every race, within reason. The spare cocks will be just as anxious to get home. Most fly more for the box than the hen I believe.

Hi Phil yes hal is Right in what he said about the needle and cotton I have used it many times before on my young birds to sex them when you can't make up your mind if its a cock or hen hold the a piece of thread about 8/9 inches long with a needle at the end a quarter of a inch above the rump if it goes in a circle its a cock and up and down its a hen make sure you do it with your back against a wall so you will be steady and no wind blowing if your not sure check one or two of your older birds first
