Light help Empty
PostSubject: Light help   Light help EmptyTue Jan 17, 2017 9:56 am

Gents I have only been flying a few years so am still experimenting with what works for me and what does not. Each year I try new things and this year i have put the stock loft on 16hrs of light to get early breeding. My thought is if the ybs are born with 16hrs light and i part them off to the ybs section which also has 16hrs light a day they will not moult as the daylight hours have not reduced so they will not trigger the moult. Am i missing something as it seems very straight forward. Too straight forward in fact. confused Suspect

I don't know with artificial lights, but YB's bred in May with similar 16 hours of daylight still quickly go in the moult in June with even longer hours of natural daylight.

cant see it working jmo you have to pull flights for the light system...you could hold off the moult for extra few weeks but that's about it ,nature will kick

PostSubject: Re: Light help   Light help EmptyTue Jan 17, 2017 8:29 pm

I have always extended the stock birds' daylight 3 weeks before I pair up, and as long as I feel necessary, to give them around 15-16 hours of daylight.

Some say you should give them 18 hours of daylight per day but I have never found this necessary.

However, if you are going to extend the birds' daylight hours by using artificial means, ie, electric light bulbs, then I believe the type of bulb you use is probably more important than the amount of daylight hours you are giving them.

I use special low wattage DAYLIGHT bulbs. You can get them through eBay. They are quite expensive, about £6 each, but they are definitely worth it and will probably last you a couple of seasons. Bear in mind, not only are you getting proper daylight, but the bulbs I am recommending are eco bulbs and therefore cheaper to run anyway.

As for extending the daylight hours for the young birds once they are separated, I have never found this necessary.

Just part the babies from their parents any time after 26 days old. There are a few posts on here about when to separate young birds, but I always take the babies away when they are picking up for themselves and/or jumping out of the nest boxes.

Just put them in the young bird loft as you would normally. Then you have time to think about whether you are going to put the young birds on the darkness system, and that is another conversation entirely.

I hope this helps. If you need any more assistance, drop me a line.

Phil

Thanks for the input gents. I have tried the dark system and just thought of reversing it with light. I am not going to pull flights that doesn't sit right with me. If I can get a few more weeks racing before the moult great. I will stick to the plan and see what happens and let you all know how it goes.cheers
