Anybody good with wood Empty
PostSubject: Anybody good with wood   Anybody good with wood EmptyFri Jan 13, 2017 4:19 pm

As you may know - we bought a new young bird loft from those sh''ts at Ecco lofts around April last year.

We have had endless troubles with it and now we have another one.

Every time it rains hard and blows a bit, we end up with damp inside the loft - in both sections.

The back of the loft faces the weather and somehow the rain must be getting in between the tongue and groove planks.

I have tried running mastic into the joints but that has not worked.

Any ideas on how to fix it permanently?

I thought I might have to clad the whole of the back of the loft in another layer of planking. But that is going to be really expensive, especially over here.

Over to you guys and ladies.

Heard of lads mixing water based wood preservative with pva glue 50/50 and few coats thickened on the wood. If doing this I'd just do a small patch first, see how it works.

Ray - if you knew how much 2 sheets of good quality 1/4 inch ply would cost over here, you would have kittens! You could almost buy a quarter of a loft for the price of 2 sheets of ply in France. For example, one sheet of exterior quality ply 12 mm costs around 120 pounds. Don't ask me why.

Thanks Barnie. Your idea may well be worth a punt. I think I have half a litre of pva glue somewhere.

Cheers everybody - if and when we get a dry day - I will try the glue and wood sealer thing.

I have both in stock - so nothing to lose.

All in all - I think the felt idea is the best.

I could paint the back of the loft with glue and wood sealer, but I will only know if it worked when it rains again and I end up with a damp loft.

The felt way CAN'T fail as long as I do it properly.

Also a roll of felt is much cheaper than sheets of ply or planks of wood.

Thank everyone and have a great weekend.

That's what most use here Mark etc & if one places a good aluminium foil under the sheets all the better. Thou I must say "smile, smile" the man I toss with doesn't worry about the foil as such & he is an absolute wizard with his results. Cheers.
