| How many of you guys 'Candle' your birds' eggs?
Last year I bought a new candler through eBay UK. It is a Brinsea product and looks like a flat egg with a little rubber chimney at the pointed end.
It is really good - the best I have ever had - if anyone needs to buy one, I can recommend this type.
Anyway - this morning I candled all our eggs that are near or over 10 days laid. Out of the 6 lots of two eggs I tested - 11 are definitely fertile and one is a maybe. Pity we don't have a lot more, I was hoping for double that, but we have had a few snags.
What about your birds?
Phil |

| I do Phil, but I just hold them up to a light bulb, at 10 days I can see if they are fertile easily, but I alway make sure my hands are clean before I handle eggs, a habit I picked when I had finches |

Do you think it is necessary to make sure you have clean hands before handling eggs? Phil |

| Don't think it matters so much with pigeon eggs Phil , larger eggs and thicker shells, but the finches I had were tiny eggs and had thin shells, always had this theory that any germs on your hands were passed through the shell and killed the embryo, just a little fad I had, maybe absolutely no sense in it, but made me feel better doing it |

| I guess it is always batter to be safer than sorrier. Lofty
I will try and remember this next time I am handing a few eggs. After all, I go to a great deal of trouble to make sure I give our birds have the best we can.
Cheers Phil |
