Freezing rain here. Went out to feed the birds. Stock loft missing 9 eggs and 2 young in nest. Banded young. Rats? Have bait around now, rat traps, live traps. Can only assume they are getting in through the aviary. Now blocked. Not a good day!!

Crap happens Hal etc & I feel your pain as such. Wouldn't have had any thing to do with that chicken wire I've seen on some of your photo's etc. For me, canary wire has always been my choice here. Cheers.

Nothing caught yet. Bait around, traps set. Found the hole they were using. In behind a nest box yet! They killed one racing hen last night. Using her in the live trap for bait. Antifreeze tomorrow.

Aviaries closed down nightly. Doubt if that was how they got in now.

Just got back with the dogs, getting dark. They caught a red fox and nuked it. One less predator.

What terrible luck Hal.

I trust you will get the bugger. I recon poison is always good as they can carry it back to their nest and kill a few more there. But at least if you catch the thing, you know you have got it!

Good luck and keep us all posted.

Really well done Hal.

Pine Martins are little sh....ts - they will kill anything that moves - and if it doesn't move, that have probably killed it already!!

We have quite a few of them, here in Central Brittany, France - and Mink.

We had a Pine Martin in our back porch, where we feed our outside cat. Must have been after the cats food. Unfortunately, I was too slow to get my gun.

Let us trust that that one was the ONLY one.

Had 4 boxes blocked off with plywood years ago. Worried about the minks mate.
So pulled off the fronts. Sure enough, hole in floor. He had a nest in one, larder in another, crapping in the last one.

Yes the missing ones. Got the bands anyway. All secure now I hope. Sardines in live traps and rat traps. Caught the last one on bread.

Glad it appears to be all sorted Hal etc. Like that you got your bands back as such "smile, smile" & they can now be recycled as they say. Cheers.

Oh dear Hal.

Do you know, when you posted the picture of the dead animal you had trapped, I did wonder if it was a mink. As I said before we have mink and pine martins here and normally, the pine martins I have seen have a gold or blond front.

In a way, mink are worse than pine martins, a mink will kill and store anything, much like a pole cat or ferrets.

Have you tried a bit of liver?

Let us trust you have sorted them ALL out.

Phil

So far so good. Traps and bait out. Still warm, just above freezing so expect some critters around soon.
