I remember folks in the allotments in Hartlepool racing from 1 mile. Using a stop watch. Guy in the US asked me about it. Do not remember too much. Is there a site I can read up on and send him? Or can one of you folks write an outline of the way it is done?
He was surprised when I told him back then we used a rusty nail in the water to give them iron! Thanks.

Halcanada if you look on you tube and type in "The Fancy" a film about Up North Combine filmed in the 80's there is a small piece about milers and shows you racing them

Also when you watch it there is a section filmed at Blackpool and the auctions in the opera house with Charlie miller when the camera moves to the audions you'll see a young lad running to his seat that is me can remember it as if it was yesterday

As for the rusty nail yes that was used for putting iron in the water for the pigeons
