| I have a hen on her own, looking after two babies at the moment. She has been on her own since the babies were 18 days old.
She is doing a great job and the two young birds are due to be weaned in 2 days time.
My question concerns single parents - but in particular Males looking after one or two babies for long periods.
If for any reason, you wanted to remove one parent, or one parent was lost in a race/training session.
1. How would a Cock cope on his own?
2. At what age do the babies have to be to survive with only one parent?
3. Are hens better at looking after babies on their own, than cocks are?
Thanks in advance.

| ive always found the cock to be a better single parent than the hen, even when 2 parents are feeding I find the hen seems to loose interest sooner........also I feel once the hen has laid again parents tend to favour the eggs rather than an older young bird. |

| I think it varies in breeding pairs sometimes the cocks more keen sometimes the hen maybe it depends on the sex of the ybs in the nest who knows ....maybe a ck is keener on feeding a young hen and vice versa ...if they are being reared in the nest box then I would rather have the ck finish rearing but if ybs are moved to a weaning section then it has to be the hen ...I have always let both parents finish the job off anyway so don't really apply here as such atb |

| Maybe this is a bit of a strange one to most people as anyone would rather have BOTH parents bringing up their babies.
However, in this case I am talking about our 'Killer' cock - the one that killed two lots of two young birds. I was really keen to get him out of our main stock loft and get him settled in the new 'Bull Pen' I made. He has 2 babies and I took him away before the y/b's were weaned.
Just for my interest - say you had a couple with young babies and you lost one in a race or training session - what are the chances of a cock or hen looking after 2 y/b's if the babies were only 10 days old or younger?

| i would say again it would be down to the individual bird but I don't think many would do it with 2 in the nest from 10 days old...atb |

Yes Daren I agree - no one would expect one parent to bring two babies up on their own - unless they had to or were forced to by the loss of one parent. As I said - it was only for my curiosity or knowledge. Thanks Phil |
