| I'm sure it's here on the forum somewhere, but just thought I'd ask again, what are the best nuts to get, I buy plenty for the wild birds but some of these look a bit dodgy, are there any in particular you guys get |

| I use the cheap bird ones. Or did. Now use safflower instead. Safer, cheaper. |

| I suppose it depends what your trying to achieve by giving peanuts. If its a treat to befriend them a way to get them trapping faster or trying to build up fat reserves for longer races. Either way there are better safer seeds out there you could use as mould is a problem with peanuts. |

| not used peanuts for a few years due to mould on them sometimes not visible to the eye ...just use a trapping mix as a treat now or a pinch of hemp |

| Was looking at sunflower hearts yesterday in b&m's, cheap to so may pick some up, remember my bullfinches used to go mental for hemp, would eat it and leave everything else, so had to be very careful feeding it, glad to know pigeons love it to, will get a small bag tomorrow when I pick up my corn |

If my memory is still in tune lofty Jack Barkel above was a great believer in sunflower hearts etc. Could be worth a read above I would suggest. ***** |

| Those would be sunflowers in the shell David, you can buy them already shelled, saves a lot of hassle, which suits me just fine |

| Lofty - as a lot of people have said - be careful which type of Red-Skin Peanuts you buy. They are one of the quickest nuts to go off and they can carry a nasty fungus - same as Brazil nuts do.
I totally believe in Safflower seed - they are one of the seeds highest in 'Short Chain Amino acids' (fats) - they are very good for your pigeons after a race, to tame your birds and also - to give to your pigeons if they have to fly over 250 miles. But give it to the birds 2 or 3 days before basketing day.
I hope this helps.

| David. Yes. However, they do contain an acid (in the black ones) that can be detrimental to the pigeons health. Mine get some occasionally when I mix in some wild bird seed. Otherwise to boost protein I stick with Safflower. |
