parted a few ybs couple of days ago into their own section away from the older ones, all were ok before i weaned them but today i noticed one looking hunched up........dipped its beak in the water and it had a drink so i though it would be ok now and it would know how to drink, went in this evening and itsstill hunched and not very interested in food when i fed the others.........any thoughts anyone please....?

David if its any consolation, I have a youngbird loft very healthy, 30 in it all weaned about a month ago and flying 1/1.5 hours a day. However over the last week a bird suddenly hunched up good droppings but not well. Then today I had another, no explanation at all but 2 sick now. I think its just natural something like children going down with various colds, chicken pox e.ct. Its just that some birds deal with it and never get ill and others get over it quickly and look fine. thats my opinion nothing to do with any diseases or hygene in the loft take them away, thats what I do if after a week in a basket they recover I put them back, if they still look ill after the week they go in the bin. Best not to worry about such things I think its just what happens when we keep pigeons.

thanks for the advise/comments everyone, went in this morning and it didnt look quite as bad as yesterday.......still not right but not as bad. anyway dipped it again and tried it with food when i fed the other 10, it seemed to be trying to eat but didnt quite know what to do and was pushed aside by the others.........ive had this happen before where younger birds cant get to the food because of older birds stopping them, but these ybs in the section are all newly weaned so should all be able to get enough food i would have thought.....anyway decided to put it back in with its parents to see what happened and it went straight to the food in the nestbox and started eating!!!!!! anythoughts?????

depending on how many days the bird has been left to fend for itself.could be that it just doesnt know how to feed itself i would keep it in with the parents for another week.but check it isnt still sitting hunched up.this is usually a sign of sickness.

hi geordiejen, had it in with parents but they wouldnt feed it so moved it back in with other ybs, it doesnt show any interest in eating or drinking now and is just getting worse.........i weaned more ybs after this one and they are eating okso when they have gone so far down i dont think there is anything can be done for them, unfortunately i think i will have to dispose of it soon.......as much as i dont want to.

yes i hate to do it but your both right, today it went out with others and because it isnt interested in food it wouldnt come in when i called them........its nestmate stayed out with it and woudnt come in too, i needed to go out for an hour so had to lock them out to take their chance against cats/hawks so had no choice........when i got home i tried again and the healthy one came straight in but the others still out so now its disrupting the others it will have to go.

let my 2nd lot of y/bs natural out this morning, 5 flew up 3 dropped after 10 minutes, 2 went off flying with 50+ others 1 came back 30 minutes later 1 still out, darkness y/bs 40 scared them up still only odd ones flying a bit, all 40 flew 10 for 5 minutes rest upto 50 minutes, 1 missing, making them go up every morning now, natural y/bs going out in afternoon less birds out then

hi steve, was talking to a good fancier last week and he told me that dark ybs dont want to fly, i know our members ybs are flying but maybe they have had to make them fly as they too maybe didnt want to.........before i put mine on the dark they were fluttering around and flying in ones and twos and i thought they will be bunching next week, but as soon as i put them on dark they stopped flying and are still not flying very much, altho since i put them on 2/3 barley and 1/3 widowhood they seem to be doing a bit better...
