Mark have a look at Campden tablets used in making wine, cheap as chips ,can't remember dosage so look into it before deciding yourself. 1/4 tab down hatch rings a bell, but they also dissolve in drinker please check first!

The young birds one or two hold corn over night and through the day and are usually a little quiet then they seem to get over it and another one or maybe two go down with it no vomiting or runny droppings and none of them have sour crop like young bird sickness so I think it might be a crop imbalance

kilpatricks black minerals ad lib is all that's required it contains charcoal and iodine I swear by it but they need access 24/7 then these things rarely arise for those showing signs at present I would give a few charcoal tablets atb

Agree with oldstrain, always had black minerals or fine coal dust available that dealt with many digestive issues etc; if they ever arose because I never had any.

I believe the black minerals were in fact manufactured from the washings from the coal when making coalite.

Just as all the dusting powders etc; are made from lime in my opinion but just dressed up.

Regards.

Never had them. But again, my birds are basically ground pickers. Turf in the stock loft occasionally. Not feasible for all. Semi-open loft.

If pigeons are on open hole they naturally know what is right and what is wrong to eat and drink, far better than we do, very different from letting them out twice a day and then getting them straight back in, when late or lost they hit a problem and eat and drink anything at hand.

Today in many cases it is like keeping pigeons as far away from nature as possible and expecting them to behave in a natural manner.

Regards.

I scattered grit over the garden slabs. Gave then contentment picking around. Especially the youngster when settling them out.

Minerals same. Coal I used crushed.
When a pigeon picks and misses, some charcoal did wonders.

Many fanciers used to have a block of rock salt, also I believe used for farm animals.

If my memory serves me right I think some blocks had iodine in them.

The fact is that if on open hole a pigeon will not normally touch anything harmful.

Iodine etc, were all in the livestock blocks. Still have some around but do not feed them. They ignore them. Same as the pile I burn wood on. Ignore the stuff nowadays.
