| of England's loss to S. Africa I've read some of the following views. Which I endorse. I've also added a lot of my own views which, I believe, in summing up the English and our loss, and mine This is granted my own opinion. Â England head coach Eddie Jones has had a blinding tournament and, tactically, has been excellent throughout. As he has in building this squad. But on this occasion South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus was awesome. Wherever England attacked, the Springboks had a defence to smother it!. England's World Cup final defeat against South Africa was desperately disappointing. One must admit that. The way England have played at this World Cup and the depth of players we have as a group, this was probably and most likely the right squad to challenge for the trophy. It hurt to see Kyle Snickler get stretched straight off though. England fans will all be feeling totally dejected but nowhere near as upset as the players and management will be. They were so far off winning that game. It is weird, though I feel dejected, it does not feel, maybe, quite as bad as if South Africa had nicked it at the death with a last-minute penalty or drop-goal. I must admit England were just not good enough. I never felt, for one minute, that England was in a position to score points then run away with it. It was always going to be a battle to the death, and unfortunately, the Springboks seemed to be more capable of winning this World Cup final. Reminds me of a few short years back, when England supposedly had a fantastic defence etc. and clear favourites to win the Six Nations etc. Wales though hadn't read the same script. They turned out a hardened lot of old pros that batter and bruised and destroyed England! Many that day never got another game for England. They proved they weren't tough enough to take a hit. This Squad is. Like Ashton sent out in the final W.C. of 2007. A team for the final against S. Africa. Yes, they tried and held their' own, but just weren't good enough. England has surely learned a big lesson. Those players are going to remember that for the rest of their' lives and hopefully store it up to say they are never going to feel like that again, never going to make those mistakes under that sort of pressure again and they will come back as better players. Indeed most of this squad are all young enough to be at the next World Cup. It will, I believe, take a good lad to prise a way to be good enough to get in the squad. Will have to be a proven and robust player, that's for sure. |

| tipped south Africa at the start ...we lost it in the scrum and a few bad lineouts whether our lad getting knocked out so early in the match effected the scrum is another matter but would not have been helpful eh,at the end of the day they took advantage and were awesome in defence whether it was on there own 22 or half way line they were immense in defence and kept that up for the whole match...underhill and itoje were my fav players of the tournament for us and japan were great to watch all round a good tournament well worth watching and a breath of fresh air compaired to mamby pamby football which has totally lost the plot these days |

| Mind, was surprised to hear a comments from the panellists regards the refereeing. Something very rare seen or heard. Indeed Captain Farrell asked the Ref - never seen that before - why the S. Africans had so long to clear the ball. why was England not given any time to clear the ball. Why wasn't the S. Africans penalises for cheating in the scrums. Why did S. Africa like the English were for... etc. No not making excuses, or crying over spilt milk. But this was shown only too well when S. Africa scored their first try! The line ref called the Centre Ref regards infringement and it went to the TMO. This showed three things. The second and third passes were close but legal. Twice though he was asked regards the first pass. Blatantly forward. Third time of asking he just said 'That doesn't matter I've awarded a try'! You couldn't make it up! Unbelievable if not seen! But my summing up stands. well done S. Africa! |

| Agreed Oldstrain 100%. But he did set a pattern and hence contributed to the game. Was a time when I did such when refereeing football matches. 'I showed them that what the called me and my father was right; lol. Would bump a ball either way. Even step across and stop it going in.
A typical stance is telling 'MOUTH A LOT' to shut it. Then disallow a good goal. AFTER the deserved protest I would tell their captain 'Just tell the lads to shut it, or I will be a B ****d or words as such. Gosh did the team knuckle under and shut up.
'Firm but Fair' was my motto, and they were told what and how I would referee before the game started.
Strange as it maybe it was often via club to have me referee. I did some top games. Had the chance to run the line for… but then that is past history and could be construed as bragging.
