| Hi, sometime we feel wrinkle on keel/chest bone. They are real big/noticeable wavy wrinkle .
Does it happen due to bad race or hard race? I read somewhere that this may be because of lipid changes in pigeon on hard race. |

| usually from squeaker or early young bird stage in my experience, I've never had an adult bird suddenly develop a bent keel unless it's been smashed up. Not sure why it happens, some say nests not deep enough, or not suitable nesting material, but I think its just down to the pigeon itself as the nestmate would be the same. Plenty winners will have a wave in the keel I've seen reported. Do you mean your adult birds get this then straighten out again after rest?

| Had the very odd 0ne with a bent keel, think it is a genetic fault like many such things in humans.
Does not make any difference to racing capabilities as scores of fanciers in the upper bracket of our sport would confirm.
Nesting material will not have any effect on the keel, it will develop just like the rest if fed correctly.
No good for showing as it is taken as a major physical fault.
Let the basket decide.

| I recall reading something ages ago about the keel not actually being bone, more of a cartilage tissue. If that's true then I guess it may be possible it could be affected by overexercsion same as an athlete perhaps? Interesting topic. |

| Doing a bit of research as anyone can do, I find from what the qualified people say about the bent keel problem, it appears to be a lack of calcium.
Would not worry about it, many pigeons with bent keels have won major races.
Just ensure you are feeding them the right type and quality of feed.
Too much taboo in our sport.

| i always thought bent keels were the result of no, or very little nesting material when in the nest........soft bones at an early age will be soft, hence as they develope the keel is bent , due to been on a hard surface . thats my opinion anyway |

| Think if nesting material had anything to do with it at all David every wood pigeon would have bent keels.
Many humans suffer similar problems having exactly the same treatment as others that do not.
If every pigeon in the loft had a bent keel then I would be worried, but if just the odd one and others not ?????.

| Should of course add that you get pigeons with bent keels in the best of lofts., using different types of bedding.

| I agree with barnie, it is an interesting subject with so many different opinions which adds to the subject.
Considering it further many of my pigeons, although always tobacco stalks and straw available, on open loft would choose their own nesting material and I never had any problems.
Have a feeling the pigeons know better than us.

| Think the same Knackered, you can Google anything and appear over intelligent, Stroud believed in lime I believe, as I remember.
Kept canaries myself for over40 years just as the pigeons, open aviary, all together, bred like good uns, just protected from rain etc; no problems.
But it is nice to kick different ideas about and experiences of others are often interesting.

| Knackered where there is muck there is money and money and health I feel goes hand in hand with getting your hands dirty as the saying goes.
The sick pale face kids are those whose parents moly coddle them, the ones among the muck thrive, a thing for fanciers to consider me thinks.
