Watched it several times, think there has been one or two changes since those days.
Those involved were real grass root fanciers, very few had money to spare and pigeons were their life.
Very few lofts like bungalows, heathy pigeons, capable pigeons into almost their teens.
No widow hood and darkness, no robot pigeons useless after a couple of seasons at most.
As the welfare of the population increased and more had better resourses so the actual sport took a more sinister pattern when the commercial boys became involved.
From the time I became involved some 80 years ago nothing has made either the health or the welfare of the pigeons better not to mention sportsmanship.
Regards.

Mind Misty, much of them so-called improvements aren't.
Very few lofts today, with all the birds, room, mamagers etc. etc could, or would be able to stay with the, say 15 pairs or so at the bottom of a good fanciers garden. Vet few lofts would have any number to breed with come september - let alone worry in regards which birds had to go.
Yes, hardly a soul, I believe, could today, afford to breed 100 or more youngsters, unless selling.
Yes I realise times and adversities have changed... mostly to the detriment of our pigeons. Held up via Chemicals/ drugs etc. etc.
I further feel, some like on here and oter site would if force to, be tere abouts come race days. Mind sadly they would be in less than 10% of fanciers. Yes you can only beat what is in front of you true. Its the yard stick at every level from Loft to nationals and LOCATIONS and Wind on the day ... Like yesteryear.

That's the trouble being old I'm Daz ones memory just keeps reminding us how things were in the past type of thing. Spin & bling is king these days I suggest & so just forget the damage on average it's doing to our great sport on the whole. *****

Sport is holding up here. C.R.P.U membership is increasing. The video...depressing! One cannot live in the past! Wheel barrows etc,. Cars for me! Yes there were many more excellent fanciers than now. Maybe. But one has to beat the competition however one can. Honestly. My statement for the week anyway..

I don't know. I still LIKE home cooking. Blackberry and apple pies etc. Wish we could still get the Lincoln Luncheon meat. Scrumping... now just left to rot on the floor!
The prices used one got the good, and best cuts cheaper. Example, say Lamb. Breast of Lamb, scrag end of neck. real cheap. Give away priced. Great for stews. Then cost wise up would was Shoulder. Top price was for the meatier one Leg! Now completely opposite... Because the flavour is in the fat. Pork the same here Hal regards prices. Leg of Pork often cheaper than then the cheapest SHOULDER. Though Great for me making my own sausages etc. I, we could all write lists of past that aren't as good... But have to accept, because Money, Profits rule eh!

Nothing tastes the same today.
Argentine corn beef I used to enjoy, today ours is rubbish, no taste and fatty.
Same with all the cerials, used to realy enjoy my oats in the morning ?, now tasteless.
The cattle and other animals are fed for quik profit not for taste.
Even fruit is grown fast that reduces the taste etc; and much stored often for many months, tastes like ice.
Used to help the butcher when of school age, what went into the sausages is no ones business but the taste was very nice.
One could argue that over all life is better all round for many, but no one could claim that food tastes like it used to.
