| Unlike old soldiers old friends do die.
Of my original 5 close male friends only 3 are still alive. (almost).
Chris who I met every Wednesday night and was the youngest, (he was a Bookie with betting shop and flats in town) we went for a meal and a natter but also saw him most days as I liked at that time to have a few 10p bets myself.
Anne his wife rang me one Monday and said he could not see me on Wendnesday night as he had had a heart attack and died, still keep in touch with Anne and their boys.
Brian was a taxi driver but retired and bought a fishing boat, he has prostrate cancer and we see each other when we can.
Mick has enough money not to work, is a brilliant electrician and is the fittest of the lot.
Tony with his partner brother owned Scarborough Fabrication and now has cancer that makes him house bound, last time I saw him was in Scarborough Hospice.
John was a coach builder working for PLaxtons and he had the worst possible death from a debilitating desease, in his latter days I actually cried every time I saw him.
Would not have missed their friendship for anything, not like the back stabbing mob you get today who are not interested in anything but self gratification and running down everyone and everything.
Regards. |

| Still pals with many lads who were in same class through school . I can think of half dozen at least who I call real friends, under normal circumstances would see socially every week including friday night, and quite a few more who I see now and then including top pigeon fanciers. Well over 50 years of friendships still going strong, been best man at each others weddings, godparents to each others kids, the list goes on. Been there for each other through bad times like parents passing, marriages failing, kids in trouble and money issues, proper friends for life. Count myself as fortunate as I don't know anyone in this situation if I'm being honest. Just shows how the original post has drifted into this |

| Yes a change from going over pigeon ground that has done the rounds for years, very little new in the pigeon game and that which is has been detrimental.
Nice to hear how fanciers are coping under the present trying circumstances.
Never liked the one upmanship attitude that can be adopted.

| Worked Leeds quite a few times. Biggest bug bare was, and most likely still is, 'Yellow lines' and/ or 'No parking' near venues. Likewise Bristol.
Parts of London obviously. Some London hotels started charging for Parking spaces in car park. Wanted you to Unload at a NCP Car park up the road. Never did. Told them Pay me my wages now, and I'll stay - if allowed to park here- IN writing!
Soon had it in many venues contracts. some agents said I would lose work! Never did.
Did a few famous venues and gigs. EMI yearly do... Agent kept hold of my wages as long as possible. August after the December gig! Told them that I was to be paid on night. They agreed, but the agent carried on doing 'Pay Agent within ...'. So saw the bosses. Promised night payments. Again didn't. So never went back.... Far better - even for a less fee to be paid within a reasonable time than mucked about because the agent could. EMI tried to book me direct for 2 years... never went back.

| Was lucky and cover very many. Hand clapping always goes down well. Some time did a hour of 'Cockney tat'. brill nights. I also did Karaoke's. Disco's Race nights and Casino's. Could name drop a bit too lol.
Started groups in 1970. Did many venues when they were full early. Became /Was part owner too with a big Band me and Pete George started. Up to 19 piece. Guess average though was 12- 13 players. Covered / backed many a 'Big Name' too!
That changed in 1997 when the players bought out the gear and went 'Swing'. Very successful too. Of course I wasn't involved with that though. |

| You have led a very interestng life Daz and obviously talented.
Bet you could tell a few stories of the ups and downs of life in general.
I would loved to have been able to play an instrument but me thinks tone deaf or others not knowing talent from total incompetance ( in my case the latter) being the order of the day I never did nor ever could but envy those that can. Have several top organist friends through dancing and envy their abilities.
Sounds as though getting paid was a bit of a struggle but it usualy is.
Found myself the more money a customer had the harder to get them to pay.
One thing for certain you will have had far more experiences than many have had.
Keep smilin Daz better times ahead.

| Clubs- many had committees on the fiddle. Hence didn't want to pay out too much. 95% of the time I got paid on the night. Soon learnt to ask - when first at the venue, who paid and/or had the cheque! Otherwise they'd be gone before the end. Corporate do essentially.
Strange, when about 4 or 5 My dad gave me a band jo. Was well above my station ... Next week it was gone! Dad told me his mate begged him for it and held it for sixpence. My half being threepence - given me. No! Of course I knew different. But I knew it was too much for me lol Sister was a great singer. Turned down many recording contracts. Won a few big contests. Her Husband was a very good footballer. Wolves wanted him to play for them this was in the days of Billy Wright of course. Well when Marion (My sister) learned that they shared a shower afterward she went ballistic. They made a pact. He packed up football, and she gave up singing. Sang at my wedding etc. Marrion was dad's love and joy regards her singing. Spent years from her being about three teaching her the scales etc. Dad was a very good musician. Played the violin for some names to the records they put out. Yes you would know the names. His sound was brill. However he never learned, or wouldn't play the violin under his chin ... not accepted.! If you dropped a few coins on the floor, dad would/could instantly play then in order. Mum was a class pianist. But for whatever reason, although we always had a piano in the house, she never played.
I took a trumpet home once. On a Thursday night. Alan Jacques was the town bands master. I learned to blow and was about able to get the scales. On the Monday dad gave me some music to read and play. I said it was beyond me. On the Thursday night, before going to the band rehearsals dad asked me to play the trumpet. I struggled, but succeeded in 'Rock around the Clock' well nearly did. Dad grabbed it in a fit of temper. bashed and bent it galore. I went a little earlier and told Alan it was a bit bent. He agreed lol. Many years later Alan used to stand in o Bass for the band. We got on famously... but never ever talked in regards that trumpet lol. |
