| Raced both North and South Road same season, swapped birds both roads during the season.
All you need is healthy capable pigeons fed and housed in an appropriate manner.
Winners come in all shapes and sizes but if you shape a family of your own they tend to be of a similar build.
A load of rubbish talked about a pigeon has to learn in stages how to home.
Why many fanciers lose pigeons is because their pigeons for several reasons are not physically capable of the taskasked of them, they know insticyively their way home but need the petrol, health and ability to get there.

| Well bred birds should home within reason, I wouldn't jump birds from loft flying straight into 200 miles but that's my choice, but difference between getting home and racing home out in front, well into YB season here and those who are banging them, I'm talking about in half a dozen or more on the drop, are those who are training every day, sometimes twice a day. from 30 miles or more. Yes pigeons are generally getting home now they've had a few races under their belt but fanciers who specialise in YB racing, darkness, heavy trainers, paired up etc are the ones who's names at top of sheet week after week. May be different in other areas, I don't know. |

Never trained either young or old birds, they would fly about 200 or 300 miles a day round the loft for the pure joy of it., many times taking off for hours.
Many species fly, every year thousands of miles at a few month olds.
Of course at some point you come a cropper for no fault of your own.
I lost six of my best pigeons from Lerwick, all had flown it on the day previously no birds returned, lady rang me from Lerwick to say she had picked up an injured pigeon and it was in very poor condition due to injury, she said there was fog and very poor conditions there, she said she would deal with it a it was beyond saving.
So of course you have bad situations but a pigeon does not need to be shown the way home by silly a few mile tosses.
Agree if you do not have open hole you are somewhat handicapped and have to train to get them fit, (not to show them the way home) but 10 mile tosses ?.
Regards.
