| But if you have had your family of pigeons a long time then you should know what to keep and what not to keep |

| In my early years of racing i would only bred 30 young birds but as years went on the numbers went up and the max i ever bred at anyone time was 60 |

| Ian do we need to breed so many young birds to compete with the big fliers ?????. Think about it only one bird can win, or do we breed so many to ensure we end up with a few to replenish the old bird losses ??? This could go back to the topic medicine and pigeons over the last 20 years pigeons have been given all soughts to make them faster, so what damage has been done to the homing ability to achieve that ??? so much so that young bird losses increase year on year ??? | dont know why but the top flyers round my area all seem to send loads of birds to the races, are they doing well because they are sending loads, and is it possible to compete and win by sending a small team ? or are they sending a load of good quality birds ? |

| Hi David dont know about ur top fliers but here in my clubs, yes they will send big teams, but what you have to think about is alot of the birds they send will be earmarked for speacialist racing ie:- 2bird clubs nationals etc 5 bird club etc yes they do well at club level but also look at the results they also achieve in the specialist racing, and yes a small team flier can compete with them im not a big team flier, but the clubs need them as much as they need small teams Ken |

| hi ken, yes i know what your saying, when they are sending a lot of birds the money it is costing to send them is going into the club isnt it.......do you think some of the positions they will win will be down to the fact that they have sent a lot of birds, are they relying on the amount of birds to gain prizes maybe because their birds arnt that good ? would it make any difference.
dont understand what ive wrote here, cant explain what i mean....lol |

| In some cases yes, but not all the time look at the birds they have clocked in the fancied pigeons will be pooled up, these will be the ones they are clocking in the ones they expected to be there or there about, they know their birds they will know the ones which will sprint but you watch when it comes to the specialist races the distant birds, it will be a different set of birds pooled, in other words they are all good birds but for different racing Ken |

| so do fanciers need different strains/breeds to compete and win....and not rely on just one type/family of pigeons ? |

| If you look at 99% of the pigeons you will find Janssens are the base of the breed, different birds crossed into them by exceptional stock men to formalate their own Family, my birds all have Janssens in them but they are mainley sprint birds upto 350 mile anything over that and i struggle to get them home on the day the true distant bird will have as a base Janssen but differet breeds crossed in to give them stamina over the distance Ken |
