hi darren, i think as a good alround breed you cant beat the jamssens.......they have been around for a long time and are still winning , pure and crossed. i remember the old strains we raced in the 80`s which were the vanhees, verheys, janssens. lefebre dhaenans and the denys bros birds, all bought from louella and did very well for us........at the end of this season i will need to have a big clear out as ive far too many birds at the moment and altho i will loose some racing i dont want to winter too many birds......

For me there are four strains that have struck me as good lines, firstly Janssens for their all round ability (Buschaerts are good too), the Lefebre Dhaenens, a particularly smart looking breed that incorporates all the physical characteristics of a pigeon I like. I think the Jan Aardens are fantastic distance birds and I intend to get some from Tumley Stud for next year but I have to admit to a particular fondness for Dordins, I don't have any but they were the breed a very successful mentor I knew had when I kept pigeons as a lad, they were all blue bars, always immaculate and consistently winning.

I have seen the odd advert for Dordins, but as you say they're not too common these days so I guess not that competetive - I think they'll stay as a fond memory. But the Jan Aardens, now that's a different story!!

Hi Darren, being a bit of a newbie I'm not overly familiar with the non-mainstream strains - what distance does the Van Geels specialise in??

mine are the same as david..lefebre dhaenans...i raced these for a few years now and nothing has beat them as yet and i,ve tried a few believe me....i have had birds to win for us over the years but these have not been as consistant as the lefebre dhaenans...others birds have won maybe higher positions ie combine but only one offs where as these i could rely on on all types of races.....but i will keep trying to find another family...can anyone out there help lol

i have a fondness for the schumans strain the american 1,000 mile family they are all dark velvets or dark cheq , and i have had some over the years from a friend near by who specialised in breeding them and even had orders for them from the far east i got a few given over the years and blended them in to the pigeons i have now which are jan Aardens , janseen , gabbys , but living in a hawk infested place like i do they go down rather quick .

darren the dhanhans i have score up to 300 miles, but they do fly further for others, apparently about 500 miles hi ray , every pigeon i have as there blood in them but as i say i fly in the NFC only and its very hard to win your section or even get in the top 500 in the open, so i can,t say there winners but to me they are when i can get them to score in the top 20 in the section D , in the NFC , i also flew in the devon and cornwall continentel flying club which covered all cornwall and devon and part of somerset and i managed to get in the top ten in the open well in to double figures flying out of lamballe in france which was just short of 200 miles to me so yes ray they will score in races but now i have no pure ones they are all crossed .cheers kev |

If one can get them the Van Riel is one of the best allround bird one can get they will win at 80mls up to 600mls with no probs anywhere, their is still some around if you get them you have got a good start, I have Aadens Van Geels, Cannons, Denny, Brakhouse, Thon`e, All distance birds they must be called mungrals as they are all mixed together I dont keep they pure I like to mix the blood up So they are pure mungrals
