Roller flying distance Empty
PostSubject: Roller flying distance    Roller flying distance EmptySat Jan 12, 2013 2:36 pm

Hi all ! Dave here from newcastle upon tyne area new member and total novice!!!. I have a dovecote in the garden with 3 roller type pigeons that live in it . I say roller type as they tend to roll for a short while in flight so am presuming they are rollers ? .Problem is they tend to sit on the roof for most of the time unless startled then they fly for a minute or two then land again. I am wondering if a bit excercise would help by releasing them on my way to work in the mornings just not sure though what kind of distance they would find there way home from as i believe the homing instinct is not as good with these type of pigeons as racing type and i really dont want to lose them . As i say total novice so any help appreciated

I am presuming if they are living in a dovecote, then they are just ornamental which are allowed their liberty at will. It would be much different if they lived in a loft as you could allow them their liberty at certain times and obviously adjust their feed accordingly, which probably is the problem.
I have not had much dealings with roller pigeons so I could not possibly advise you, but I wouldnt really think taking them away to toss them would really be a good idea.

yes would agree if they have open dovecote then they will just exercise at will ...dont think i would take away from dovecote and release ...even more so at this time of year with birds of prey in abundance and being hungry jmo

I have had ROLLERS--They are "NOT" homers
If they get out of sight of the Loft/Dovecote-----they are lost
Just my Opinion-and exprence.
ALSO---just my Opinion----If you let them out EVERDAY with Hawks around--
you better hatch 365 birds. You will loose "ONE" ever day.
