| how far up his wing, is it one of his end ones? Up to first 3 I'd cut it straight across and leave it 10 days to die back, soak area in warm water then pull it. It'll be back in @ 3 weeks plenty time before racing. Different if its one of the longer ones, cut it just below the broken bit in a "V" shape and cut one from donor bird in a matching "V", might take a few goes to get flights matched. Slide a longish needle down the centre of quills with a bit superglue each end and tiny dot where the centre spines meet and push 2 parts together but you'll have to keep his wing open till glue dries.( breathe on it as moisture quickens setting of superglue.) You need someone to help aswell. I did this with a channel bird some years ago, 2nd off last flight and it lasted nearly all season till it came off in the bath one day. Put a different colour feather in then you notice straight away if its come apart. Hope it works- just have plenty patience.

| the idea is to splice the quill at an angle, and slide one inside the other and super glue...... like i say, not sure if it holds up but worth a try i suppose. |

You are absolutely right, I went to see the number one Long distance fancier last year and he was doing exactly what you said "glueing a feather in to the wing of a bird that had broken its flight. The bird in question was to go to Vittoria 500 miles and I had never seen or heard this before but he was adamant it would be fine. He clocked the bird in a real tough race as his 2nd pigeon and told me he had done it many times. As regards how long it would hold up in a season its hard to say but no reason why iy shouldnt last all season and you may be able to make a repair again in the same year. Certainly worth a try. |
