Six racing pigeons in Belgium were found to have been doped with drugs

Six racing pigeons in Belgium were found to have been doped with drugs such as cocaine and painkillers, newspapers in the country say.

They said that the doping was revealed when the Belgian pigeon-racing federation sent samples from 20 birds to the National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa.

The newspapers said that the birds tested positive for numerous drugs.

Pigeon racing in Belgium is a highly lucrative sport.

In May a Belgian racing pigeon called Bolt - named after Olympic gold-winning Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt - was sold to a Chinese businessman for a world record price of 310,000 euros (£260,000: $400,000).

It was thought that the buyer wanted to use Bolt for breeding more birds.

Correspondents say that the riches and glamour connected with racing pigeons have brought many problems, including thefts from breeders and racketeering.

Reports say that the doping of the birds was only unearthed in South Africa - tests carried out in Belgium did not reveal a problem.

The sport revolves around specially bred and trained pigeons released from a specific location and racing back to their home loft.

To be honest i'm shocked it's only 6 that tested Positive .

That does not surprise me at all its big money in Belguim this great sport and when you have the chineses coming to buy the best then some fanciers will stop at nothing to get that win

I have herd of different claims regards drugs in pigeons, and most to me seen a waste of time, they are as stated cocaine, caffine and other stimulants or pain killers but being that all these are short acting drugs they would be pointless, unless administered just before lib.

These people using drugs are not fanciers we should be worried about because firstly they will ruin the pigeons and long term the future for them will be bleek and they are just experimenting out of desperation and I would suggest they are not champions or winning fanciers, and that's why they have resorted to trying to cheat.

These so called Fanciers are what are called "Shooting Stars" ;they come inject get Quick results & have sales to make money ;some of them are using the Top Vets to get the Stuff ? ; as far as staying in there System long enough they have ways & means to do that slow releasing Capsuls & drugs ; The True Fanciers wouldn't even think of stuffing there birds up but not those low life .Ban them for life ; cheers
