| do any of our members use a whistle to control their birds etc, started giving it a go again after failed attempts other years........ the reason ive decided to try again is that ken brought me two ybs at the weekend and when they are out i shake my tin as usual and they didnt take any notice at all, and niether did my own birds very much..........i then decided to blow a whistle to see what reaction it had on them, as soon as i blew it kens two ybs came running accross the grass and straight into the loft!!!!!!!!!! so now im going to give it another go any tips or help info anyone please.........? |

| hi steve, whenever i do it i seem to scare them more than anything.........but i suppose its just persisting with it to get them to respond, shaking the corn tin usually works in the loft but i dont think they can hear it enough outside so the one thing im dreading is on race days when they refuse to come in........... |

| I've never used a whistle personally but i have seen others use it. used to good affect on race days , seen birds that would have gone over turn round and came back when they have heard the whistle. on down side it may annoy fanciers that are close by. |

yes darren, ken said this to me.......says there was a big bunch of pigeons going over his lofts so he started blowing his whistle and 4 dropped out of the pack which were his birds, says they had gone past and that the whistle brought them back. |

| Hi david I always call my birds, and im always talking to them and they really do respond to it they know your voice..last year I went to a local fancier to pick a bird up and while in his garden a late trainer flew over, he ran to the loft got out a referee whistle and blew it hard, the bird dropped like a stone I was amazed how it got the bird from the sky...BUT AND A BIG BUT, when I went home and thought about it, my birds come to my call and know my voice, what if another fancier used a referee whistle and started blowing it race day, my bird flying with a batch I bet it would drop hearing it as they all sound the same... So for me I will keep talking to them. |

| But for me it has to be the whistle everytime for the youngbirds but only use it when you are feeding them, and when they are out and you use the whistle to call them in the ones which mess about lock them out and feed the others after 30 mins call not whistle the ones left out in NO FOOD FOR THEM the next time you use the whistle they will be in like snips |

| But when they are yearlings feed them first, because if you feed the youngbirds first then the yearlings will think it is time for there feed and you do not want a mix up with your birds being confused |

| The whistle is a sharper sound compared to the tin which is a dull sound |

| I started using a whistle last year and it seemed to work good, thing is the neighbours didn't like it much, but saying that I don't like there cats and they do nothing about them, so it's out with the whistle again this year ... |

| David why don't you use the pigeon eggs you don't want as it does less damage compared to stones
As this is what i used when the youngbirds went on the roof |

| I know pigeons are clever and the janssens who I idolise used whistles, but for me no matter what whistle you use if you condition a response and youngbirds hear it they will come out of the sky and either get lost or be late home. |

| had ybs out this morning for a flutter around, been out for approx one hour so i decided to call them in...........though id try the tin first and as soon as i shook it they all came straight into the loft, so i think that has made up my mind for me....... ive come to the conclusion that if they are trained properly to come in to the tin thats good enough.....when you think about it most fanciers who are using the whistle have used it with the old birds so even the ybs in the nest have heard it from being hatched ........ |
