Just thinking about this ,when I first started racing nearly everyone was on a equal par when it came to preparing your birds.it was just good descent corn clean water..canker twice a year worms ect ect ..now you have to be a vet to get them right you need to use the right corns for certain races .canker every two weeks in some cases .it's unreal..its makes you wonder if we went back to basics what racing would be like now..I do admit medication is our weak point we still rely on good honest birds and hard work but as they say to have to go with the flow if you want to compete and we are getting there now on medicatoon side but I am still a bit old fashioned when it comes to it.treat when needed but we have to change

i think you have to treat ray, when they are in baskets with other birds, whos owners are sending them racing....you've got to keep ahead of them catching anything.

I don't say antibiotic them all the time, but things such as worms, canker , cocci are just normal treatment/preventatives.

we have to worm regularly when racing but never outside of it a lot of hairworm about in the baskets look at what your fed uses in their crates it will give you a good idea about how rife the worms will be ...we use easybed so you can imagine the birds pecking around in that when in the baskets.canker goes without saying but rarely do I have to cocci them only ever treat in race season and prior to pairing but not with antibiotics

yes ian, I think far too many just send their birds regardless of if they are ill or not.....they have no concern for the birds or other members birds.

still find this part of racing a grey area, I know of good fanciers who swear blind they don't "treat" but on visiting their loft its like boots chemist, others who are quite open about treating and say its the only way to win, I am trying my best to keep away from antibiotics and apart from keeping on top of canker only worm them twice yearly, and cocci the same. minefield in my opinion and one that always worrys me if I'm doing right thing.

i think your doing the right thing redrog, the precautionary canker, cocci and worms are part of maintaining a healthy team.....only use anti biotics as a last resort.

that's my theory anyway...... Very Happy
