Only thing we use is honey and lemon juice as a pick me up, anything they pick up in the baskets we hope their immune systems will fight it off

Yes, definitely David, they do send birds not well enough to race, sick, it's shocking to say the least, I know it happens because I've put birds through and the owner has said to me that the bird isn't right, it's why I try and sent our limit of 25 , so I have a race basket to myself

Fanciers cannot put theirs all in one basket here. So they are always mixed up.

First drink electrolyte in the water if a channel race then treat with a 4 in1 if a land race just electrolyte

I think you need to be careful whatever you put in because when a bird returns, especially on a harder or hotter day, the pigeons always drink a lot more than usual maybe 4 or 5 times more. Might end up overdosing them.

Likely be fine David or even later in day on return race day. Channel races I used to put homemade electrolytes in ready for return, I can't remember exactly recipe but it was along lines of 40 parts glucose, 1 part bicarb, 1 part lo-salt and never freezing cold water straight out tap, always stood a while or bit warm water to take chill off.

PostSubject: Re: Water Treatments on Return   Water Treatments on Return EmptySat Jan 13, 2018 9:48 pm

Full pdf is way to  long. But here is a reply to microbacteria.

Roger Ven Soriano TorresGroup Admin These articles should seriously make one think everytime one uses or prescribes an antibiotic indiscriminately. So called "cleaning up" the breeders before the season and the YB race season who eventually are stocked. To see OLR returns at best at 53% and worst below 10%, makes one wonder if it is truly the "professional handlers" flaws or that of the breeders. But then when one "invest" on these imports costing thousands of dollars, one has to protect their STOCK value. It is up to the fancier breeder to prioritize their moral compass and goals. The quest for vigor, vitality, cognitive superiority or the value of your stock investment for sale! Hope the article above by my colleague and friend Robert Corish, M.D., a former professional soccer player in UK , helps.

For me Smile Smile kind on Saturday (race day) treat on Sunday etc. switch between Bi-carb soda & povidine iodine. 2 cheapies, that have stood the test of time from my perspective. Now Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Smile Smile Electrolytes  lol! lol! lol! I really scratch my head with this one & go Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad & think to myself, has the pigeon world gone crazy "Big time" Smile Smile. If people here with my tempretures on race day don't use them as such & have success. Why in god's name Smile Smile would anyone with your tempretures there Don use them. I just put it down to that feel good thing, more so for the owner I suspect Wink Wink.  cheers

I use electrolytes about once a week or so in the winter. Just for the minerals etc,.
Honey on its own puts mucous in the throat. With lemon juice it does not.

Knackered when pigeons have raced hard to get home then they need that pick me up regards what temperatures they have to race in, any athlete needs a pick me up to recover better from
exhaustion

True Smile Smile but much of the sh*te people put in front of them on return I suspect Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes has a negative effect/factor in the long run from my perspective Don Smile Smile.

It is debatable. Bicarb soda makes for less acid in the gut. ACV is neutralised. So logically it suppress the acidic gut that prevents bad bacteria forming.
But if one feels good doing it why not?
Why not leave as is? Rest and good food should accomplish the same result.

Bring the science factor/experts into anything Hal Smile Smile & I go missing big time on what picture they try too paint etc Wink Wink. Name most things with pigeons & somehow some one will have a postive/negative view from my perspective  Smile  Smile.

I do not treat birds on return from a race. No matter the distance or time on the wing. May happen that after a tough one, treated on return, they look good enough to go the following week. When perhaps they are not?

plenty treating with antibiotics prior to pairing ,I know I keep banging the drum but this treatment to rid the breeders of salmonella etc if the birds are ok after pmv vaccination then leave well alone that's why mine get their pmv vaccination in early December just before pairing, treating just in case will only have adverse effects ,regards electrolytes I only use them on birds that return late and are exhausted and in the shape of de weerds belgasol
