| http://www.tmakowecki.com/Discussions/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2236Jackson flew yearlings 1000 miles. DO we molley - coddle our beloved friend and take away their very merit and capabilities? I strongly believe so. Did the bird fly over the lakes or around it etc. if it did, then the miles covered would be greatly increased. Especially as we know that a pigeon zig - zags in flight?! |

| The fancier appears to think the pigeon flew it in stages, seeking food along the way.
The best guess is that the pigeons were frighted to death by something and flew blindly until exhausted and would not have been able to go further, whilst others hid.
When someone broke into our loft on Olivers Mount two youngsters were frightened out of the loft, and both ended up in the top end of Scotland, both had not been long out of the loft. ( the fanciers who reported them said they had entered their loft on the same day)
Fright can affect the actions of that which is involved in different ways.
Not able to move to going far beyond their normal capabilities, if we had sent the two young pigeons under normal circumstances to the Scotish lofts and let them go there is no way they would have returned to our loft.
Exceptions cannot be taken as normal.
Regards.

| I had a video showing how China experimented and flew pigeons over1,000 miles and in areas contaminated with nuclear fall out, to test both their endurance and the effect of radiation.
There was a number of pigeon photographs and as I remember they were on the large side and with large wattles.
Loaned the vidio out, never had it returned, if the fancier concerned reads this, PLEASE RETURN IT.
Those able to fly over 1,000 miles in reasonable time are as rare as rocking horse manure.
You get exceptions in most things and our pigeons are no exception.
Regards. Regards.

| racing the 1000 miles is not cut and dried ,conditions would play a massive part so would nutrition and above all else wind direction ....you cant just say "the bird flew 1000 miles " theres much more detail involved than that eh ....specifics |

| Me thinks if a pigeon could talk a lot of myths would be exposed.
All kinds of flying creatures fly thousands of miles every year some not weighing a gramme, some only months old.
No training at ten 10 miles etc;
All creatures have within their ranks members with entirely different capabilties, this is so that some will always be able to cope and survive under diabolical circumstances.
Great what the creator has done, pity about mankind.
Regards.

| I remember 'Bilco's 'Race from Rome. Just over 1000 miles to me. Many here about had god returns. It was too hot etc. Strange also there seemed, for some reason, many getting 17-day birds.
As Hal will recall the Lake Pickle distance race in Canada - which Mike Van de Jagt and I much time with, to pick the lib site etc. Finding places with access to was also a problem. We wanted the birds in the main to have a North Westerly following wind. Mike did a lot of personal campaigning, and we used the leading Canadian pigeon site to drum up support.
Which started with an excellent showing. Indeed I forecasted pretty much where the winning birds would be. But after a few time, it waned and eventually folded.
If there is one thing, Canada has it is plenty of lands etc. Not like here where a race point can be pretty much attended by most. Over there, there are vast distances between lofts.
In total, about 1700 pigeons lofts spread over a vast array of land. I also spouted with many, that in Canada they have great help in respect of pigeons health and conditions. Good crops are enhancing cleaner air. Better oxygen due to plants and LAKES! And a lot less pollution like we have always due to traffic and more crowded living styes. We are cramped, especially when compared to Canada. |

| Red hen was picked up on the back end of a fast steam train. Train name "Flying Scotsman." Maybe the bird could read? Yes we are lucky here land/lake and weather extremes. Tornados last night out West. Want a change of climate? Move East or West or North. South is US. |
