First babies over

First 2021 babies took off parents tonight. Only 3 for now but be 10 by about thursday. Always feel sorry for them, must be traumatic when you think about it suddenly whipped away into another section and left to it.

22/23 days knackered I could have waited another few days ideally, but they were starting to venture on to the front perch of nest boxes, Theres a yearling cock always looking for trouble and if theses babies fell to the floor they would have been scalped for sure, I'll keep an eye on them and can always pop them back to their boxes and their pa's will top them up for an evening feed .

always a risk eh colin that scalping lark is not nice to see ,i always had a weaning section with a bed of shavings and there bowls placed on top ,a drinker on the floor on a grill and a hopper with food in left down all day for 4/5 days (breed and wean) then first sign of going up to a perch they would be moved to the yb section

first 6 put over, can't breed any earlier as have time it for clocks going forward so can get them out on a night. Leaving alone, not darkness.

never, never leave it any later down here on average bounce

as I would run into trouble with the next round as such & the the quality of feed they would receive when hatching on a normal 28/30 day type circle. cheers

ive 15 pairs eggs hatched, some only one in the nest......but i reckon theres around 26 ybs there, and all within a few days of each other, happy so far .

Yes, I remember only too well my first 'Scalpings' with horror.

Then I realised / told that it was caused due an ardent cock was driving the hen back to nest so to speak, and the youngster(s) were in the way!
So - which worked for me, and never I had it again, was putting another nest bowl in the nest box.

Pigeons can be vicious, seen some awful scalpings myself Daz, right down to the skull.

Had a few scalpings off missus myself when I nipped out for an hour but the local kept serving into the small hours........ Laughing
