A HERO South Yorkshire soldier has been honoured for almost single-handedly pinning down Taliban fighters while two comrades lay injured in Afghanistan.


Lance Corporal Levi Webb has received a Task Force Commanders’ Commendation for bravery during the incident only days into his first tour of duty in Afghanistan on June 27 last year.

Levi, aged 21, of the Royal Dragoon Guards, was driving a Viking 2 armoured vehicle in a mission to push the Taliban out of a village stronghold in the Nahr-e-Saraj area of Helmand when a truck in front of him hit a roadside bomb.

The two crew were badly hurt and ‘Webby’ was left alone as his comrades went to help the injured men. But they became pinned down by enemy bullets inches above their heads.

Levi, who has previously served in Iraq and is one of several South Yorkshire members of the regiment, stood up in full view of the enemy and calmly fired shot after shot, keeping the Taliban fighters’ heads down.

His bravery allowed other members of his patrol to reach the injured men.

Levi, of Conisbrough, near Rotherham, said: “I could see rounds ricocheting around the casualties and thought, ‘I need to do something’.

“I jumped out of the wagon and started shooting. It was just instinct - it would have been cowardly to just sit there and watch. Any soldier would have done the same thing if they were there.”

The Royal Dragoons had been fighting for days before the incident and after his courageous actions fought on with what commanders say was ‘significant success’ against the Taliban.

But, tragically, it did not happen without the loss of another regiment member from South Yorkshire, Trooper James Leverett, 20, of Rawmarsh, Rotherham, who was killed in an explosion just over a week later.

Commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Jamie Piggott said: “L Cpl Webb showed extreme valour in the face of the enemy and put his life on the line for those of his friends.

“His actions displayed enormous courage and self-control and were frankly inspiring to all those who serve with him. He epitomises what it means to be a Royal Dragoon Guard. We are enormously proud of him.”
